Drivers in Spain often face the loss of points on their licenses due to various traffic violations. For those who don’t want to wait for automatic restoration, there is an option to take special training in order to regain some or all of their points more quickly. This approach is especially relevant for professional drivers and those at risk of losing their right to drive.
Point recovery courses are divided into two types: partial and full. The first option allows drivers to recover up to six points if they have only lost part of their total. The second is designed for those who have exhausted their entire quota and must complete training followed by an exam at the local traffic authority office (Dirección General de Tráfico, DGT).
The training program includes both theoretical and practical sessions. The main focus is on developing responsible driving habits, analyzing common mistakes, studying risk factors, and reviewing key safety rules. During the course, participants examine real-life situations, learn how to prevent accidents, and assess the consequences of careless actions behind the wheel.
The cost of training depends on the type of course selected. Partial point recovery will cost between €150 and €200. A full course is more expensive—typically ranging from €300 to €400. This price includes all necessary materials and instructor services. After completing the course and passing the exam, the driver regains the ability to drive with restored points.
Classes are held only on designated dates and times set in advance by the traffic authorities. You cannot choose your own day to attend—schedules depend on the region and the availability of training centers. A partial course usually lasts 12 hours, split over two to three days, while a full course takes 24 hours, spread across four to five days.
In recent years, it has become possible to complete part of the training remotely. However, not all training centers offer online courses, and for certain categories of drivers, in-person attendance remains mandatory. It’s recommended to check the details with your chosen driving school before enrolling to avoid misunderstandings.
The point recovery course is intended only for those who have already lost some or all of their points. Drivers who have not had their maximum limit reduced are not eligible for this service. Therefore, taking the course becomes a mandatory step to regain the right to drive after serious violations.
