On Ibiza, the housing situation is becoming increasingly tense. Even those working in secure government positions are finding it impossible to rent or buy an apartment at a reasonable price. One airport firefighter ended up in this predicament: despite having a steady job, he had to move into a camper van just to save money any way he could.
A young professional, having landed a job on the island, was confident he would be able to find a small but decent place to live. However, the reality turned out to be much harsher. Rental prices in the region are so high that even a public sector salary is nowhere near enough for a private apartment. In the end, his only option was to buy a camper van, which now serves both as his home and as a place to rest after work shifts.
The problem is further complicated by the fact that firefighters aren’t the only ones facing these difficulties—other workers in the service and security sectors are also affected. Many of them, even after completing training and earning their qualifications, are forced to leave the island because they simply cannot settle here. This constant staff turnover becomes the norm: new employees come in, undergo training, but soon leave, unable to cope with the financial pressure.
The housing crisis in Ibiza is becoming one of the main reasons specialists are leaving the island. Despite its reputation for luxury resorts and a high standard of living, the island proves unfriendly to those who ensure its safety and daily operations. As a result, not only individual workers suffer, but the entire region’s infrastructure is affected.
