There have been significant changes in the Andalusian government: after Rocío Hernández stepped down as head of healthcare, Antonio Sanz has temporarily assumed her duties. The leadership transition was officially formalized in early October, and Sanz is now responsible for all matters related to healthcare and consumer affairs in the region.
Hernández’s resignation was prompted by a scandal over the organization of breast cancer screening. Delays in diagnostics and widespread public dissatisfaction—especially in Seville—forced the authorities to take emergency action. Regional officials have promised to urgently develop and implement a crisis management plan to reduce waiting lists and restore public trust in the healthcare system.
The healthcare portfolio in Andalusia has long been considered one of the most challenging. In recent years, several ministers have come and gone, each facing criticism over long waiting lists, overstressed primary care, and questionable contracts awarded in emergency situations. All these issues now fall to Sanz, previously known as a tough and pragmatic manager.
Antonio Sanz is no newcomer to regional politics. He has already proven himself as someone capable of negotiating with unions and employers, as well as implementing reforms in emergency services. However, not all his initiatives were met with approval: the merger of rescue and fire services sparked controversy due to resource shortages and employee dissatisfaction. Now, he faces similar challenges, this time in the healthcare sector.
In the coming weeks, public attention will be focused on the actions of the new interim head. The speed and effectiveness with which accumulated problems are resolved will determine not only the region’s calm but also political stability within the Andalusian government.
