An unprecedented incident occurred in Galicia: police officers intercepted a large shipment of cocaine delivered to the coast by a narco-submarine. The operation resulted in the arrest of 14 people involved in unloading and further distribution of the drugs. The total weight of the seized cargo was approximately 3.5 tons.
The events unfolded in the area of A Pobra do Caramiñal, where the cocaine was discovered just as it was about to be sent for further storage and distribution. According to preliminary reports, the unloading took place around September 13. The first suspects detained—three men from Colombia and Ecuador—tried to pose as pilgrims supposedly walking the Camino de Santiago, but their cover story quickly fell apart. The submarine used to transport the cocaine has not yet been found.
The operation involved officers from the organized crime unit as well as local police. Thanks to coordinated actions, authorities not only discovered the shipment but also conducted a series of searches in seven towns across Galicia. As a result, 11 more people were arrested, including businessmen connected to the maritime industry in Cambados. This town is considered one of the key centers of the drug trade in the region.
The drugs were hidden in two vehicles that attempted to leave the beach at night. However, police were already monitoring the situation. During the ensuing chase, one of the trailers lost part of its cargo, which allowed officers to promptly seize about a ton of cocaine. The rest was later found in a warehouse after a thorough search of the area.
The entire operation was coordinated by the court of Muros, and the detainees will soon appear before a judge. Three suspected members of the narco-submarine crew have already been sent to pre-trial detention without bail. The seized cocaine is estimated to be worth over 80 million euros. This case marks the first time in Spain that such a large shipment delivered by submarine was intercepted on land rather than at sea.
