Scandal at the Spanish embassy in India becomes one of the most talked-about events in recent months. At the center of the story is police commander Emilio de la Calle, who, according to El Pais, pressured a subordinate and attempted to hide signs of her distress. The case has caused a significant stir in Spain, as it raises questions about the safety of staff abroad and the transparency of government institutions.
The situation escalated after the employee, whose name has not been disclosed, sought medical help due to her declining health. The supervisor not only demanded she remain silent about what was happening but also threatened her career. According to El Pais, the commander insisted on receiving her medical documents and exerted control over her personal life, as confirmed by numerous audio recordings made by the victim herself.
Pressure and threats
The audio recordings obtained by investigators reveal the chief using harsh language, demanding constant reports, and even interfering in her private conversations. He insisted she be available at all times and did not hold back when criticizing her professional skills. According to the victim, the pressure intensified each month, and after an incident in February 2025, the situation escalated into open conflict.
That day, the employee lost consciousness at her workplace due to stress. The building manager drove her home, where he continued to insist that she not disclose the real reasons for her condition to the doctor. He also demanded to see the injury she sustained from the fall and openly stated he was willing to intrude on her personal space. According to El Pais, a camera was active in the house at the time, capturing the incident.
Investigation and aftermath
After she filed a court complaint and an official report, Spain’s Ministry of the Interior suspended Emilio de la Calle from his position. The investigation revealed that back in 2020, other employees had also reported him, but the internal probe was closed at the time for lack of evidence. Now, however, investigators have more than 20 hours of recorded material that has become key evidence in the criminal case.
During the investigation, it was found that the manager not only threatened his subordinate, but also tried to control her medical visits and interfered in her personal relationships. The authorities classified the manager’s actions as potential crimes under several articles, including harassment, threats, invasion of privacy, and sexual assault. The court proceedings are ongoing, and the suspect remains suspended from his job.
Reaction and context
This case has sparked discussion among professionals and human rights advocates. Many experts note that such incidents are not isolated, and the system for responding to employee complaints needs to be reconsidered. According to El Pais, police unions have repeatedly raised the issue of stricter oversight of managers’ behavior, especially during overseas missions.
In recent years, Spain has seen a rise in investigations involving high-ranking police officials and other government agencies. In 2023, a similar incident occurred at a consulate in Latin America, where authorities also identified evidence of pressure on subordinates. That investigation led to personnel changes and tighter internal controls. These cases highlight the need for systematic solutions and greater attention from the authorities.
