Madrid opens rare sites and showcases unique collections

Five free events in Madrid from exhibitions and fashion to the Semana Santa finale

A series of free events is launching in Madrid. Residents can enjoy rare exhibitions, concerts, and historical tours. These events could reshape the city’s cultural life and attract new visitors.

At the beginning of April, Madrid becomes a hub for cultural events that can transform the city’s usual rhythm. Free activities covering various spheres—from religious processions to fashion exhibitions and tours of normally closed buildings—open up new opportunities for residents and visitors. As El Pais notes, such initiatives not only broaden access to art and history but also create new points of interest for the city’s population.

This year, Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Madrid promises to be especially vibrant. From April 3 to 5, the city’s streets fill with processions that take place not only in the center, but also in more remote districts. On Friday, April 3, the Vía Crucis in Villaverde begins at noon, while in the evening attention shifts to the Jesús de Medinaceli and Cristo de los Alabarderos processions, which pass through iconic locations including Puerta del Sol and Palacio Real. Other neighborhoods, such as Puente de Vallecas and San Raimundo de Peñaforte, also hold their own processions. On Saturday, April 4, the activity slows down, but the important Soledad procession still takes place, and on Sunday, April 5, Semana Santa concludes with the traditional tamborrada at Plaza Mayor and a procession in Barajas.

Literary routes

Literature enthusiasts can visit the exhibition ‘Valle-Inclán en Madrid’ at the Biblioteca Regional de Madrid (3 Ramírez de Prado St., Delicias metro). Open until June 21, the display offers not just a chronology of the writer’s life but an immersion into his creative workshop. Visitors will find manuscripts, letters, first editions, photographs, and personal items that highlight three distinct periods of Valle-Inclán’s life in Madrid. Special attention goes to the city’s influence on his work and his connections with culture on both sides of the Atlantic. The exhibition presents Valle-Inclán not only as a writer but also as an editor, designer, and traveler, allowing a glimpse of the era through the lens of his biography.

The exhibition highlights how Madrid’s cafés, literary salons, and international circles shaped Valle-Inclán’s unique style, with his aesthetic—reaching its peak in the ‘esperpento’ genre—becoming a reflection of the era. This approach not only sheds light on the writer’s creative process but also conveys the atmosphere of early 20th-century Madrid.

Musical bridges

Casa de América (Plaza de Cibeles, Banco de España metro) invites the public on April 9 to the concert ‘Indianos: el latido de dos orillas’. The event celebrates cultural ties between Spain and Ibero-America, bringing together traditional genres such as habanera, bolero, waltz, and singer-songwriter music. The evening’s main figure is Pipo Prendes, the Asturian musician who has spent most of his career between two continents. His performance is both a musical journey and a story of migration, return, and shared identity, where tradition and modernity blend in harmony.

The concert highlights that cultural exchange between Spain and Latin American countries remains relevant today. Such events help strengthen ties and shape a new perception of shared history, which is especially important for the capital, where multiple cultural currents converge.

Fashion and History

At the Sala Canal de Isabel II (Santa Engracia St, 125, metro Alonso Cano), the exhibition “Nostalgia/Utopía” runs until July 12. It is dedicated to nearly two decades of Ana Locking’s work. More than 160 pieces of clothing, rare collections, and audiovisual materials turn the exposition into a dialogue between the past and the future of fashion. Here, clothing becomes a language that tells the story of the search for identity and dreams of the future.

For those interested in history, on April 9, Fundación Juan March (Castelló St, 77, metro Núñez de Balboa) will host a lecture on the culture of the English Renaissance. Philologist Joan Curbet will speak about the era of Isabel I, when literature, philosophy, and music shaped a new European sensibility. The program includes live music performed on historical instruments by Mireia Latorre and Peter Krivda, making the lecture not only informative but also immersive.

Rare Guided Tours

A special place in the program is given to the tour of Banco de España (Alcalá St, 522, metro Banco de España). As part of the open house days, visitors can access areas usually closed to the public for free—from the monumental staircase to the historic Goya Hall. The tour lasts an hour and a half and combines architecture, art, and the history of the country’s financial institutions. These visits offer a new perspective on Madrid’s economic landmarks and reveal their importance to the city.

In recent years, Madrid has increasingly become a venue for free cultural initiatives. For example, in 2025 the city already hosted large-scale exhibitions in municipal museums and organized open-air concerts in central squares. Such events not only make art more accessible but also boost domestic tourism by drawing attention to lesser-known sites and new cultural trails. According to El Pais, interest in free events is steadily growing, and the variety of formats allows everyone to find something they enjoy.
