In 2025, Madrid received unexpected international recognition: US President Donald Trump called the Spanish capital the safest city in the world. This statement came amid discussions on measures to reduce crime in Washington, where the federal government plans to take control of the city police.
During his speech, Trump presented an analytical report comparing homicide rates in major world capitals. According to this data, Washington recorded 27 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, placing the city at the top of the list among the major metropolises considered. For comparison, Bogotá has a rate of 15, Mexico City — 10, Islamabad — 9, and Lima — 7.
The ranking continues with cities such as Ottawa, Paris, Havana, Delhi, and London, where crime rates are significantly lower. Madrid was at the very end of the list, which allowed it to be recognized as the safest capital among the world’s major cities.
The American president noted that Madrid’s experience could serve as an example for other metropolises facing a rise in crime. In this regard, Washington plans to strengthen security measures: the city will receive 800 National Guard troops and 120 FBI agents. Additionally, there is discussion about involving the military and declaring a state of emergency to stabilize the situation.
Among the additional measures under consideration is the closure of homeless shelters, which authorities believe will help regain control of the city. The country’s Attorney General, Pam Bondi, who also attended the briefing, will oversee the new security system.
US authorities attribute the rise in murders in the capital to the activities of illegal migrants, which became a central theme in the president’s address. At the same time, Madrid continues to show a low crime rate, attracting attention not only from politicians but also from security experts.
For several years, the Spanish capital has ranked highly in international ratings for quality of life and safety. Local authorities note that effective police work, a developed video surveillance system, and the active participation of residents in city life all contribute to this success.
Amid such comparisons, Madrid is strengthening its image not only as a cultural and tourist hub but also as a model for public safety. This recognition could influence the city’s future development and enhance its appeal to foreign investors and tourists.
