Madrid authorities have announced the launch of a major financial support program for entrepreneurs, set to begin in 2026. The one-time grant for new self-employed workers will increase to €6,200. This decision has already been included in the regional budget proposal and aims to boost small businesses and create new jobs.
The focus is not only on new entrepreneurs, but also on those who have been self-employed for several years. Authorities emphasize that special conditions are provided for residents of small communities, people over 52, and those who have struggled to find work for a long time. For them, the support amount will be the highest.
Conditions and priorities
The basic grant amount for new entrepreneurs will increase from €4,000 to €5,600. However, for certain categories, such as long-term unemployed individuals or residents of rural areas, the payment will reach €6,200. This is a 40% increase compared to last year.
The program is also compatible with other support measures. For example, entrepreneurs can benefit from the so-called ‘zero rate’—an exemption from social security contributions during the first year of business. For people over 52 who have stopped receiving unemployment benefits, there is an additional monthly payment of €480 if their income does not exceed 75% of the minimum wage.
Budget expansion
The total amount of funding to support entrepreneurs in Madrid will increase by nearly 18%, reaching €37.1 million in 2026. That’s €5.6 million more than the previous year. Authorities plan to allocate more than €83 million for these purposes over the three-year period from 2025 to 2027.
In addition to support for startups, there are separate subsidies for companies that have been operating in the market for more than three years. These payments are aimed at strengthening the sustainability of existing businesses, supporting their growth, and creating new jobs.
Public response
The announcement of new support measures came against the backdrop of mass protests by entrepreneurs held in late November in Madrid and other cities. Participants in the demonstrations demanded not only increased financial aid, but also a reduction in bureaucratic hurdles and the introduction of fair contributions based on actual income.
Although the new program doesn’t solve all the issues highlighted by small business representatives, authorities believe that increasing payments and expanding eligibility are important steps toward improving conditions for the self-employed.
Application procedures
Detailed guidelines for submitting applications, a list of required documents, and the acceptance timeline will be published on Madrid’s official government portal in the coming months. Final terms are contingent on the approval of the 2026 regional budget, which is currently under review by the autonomous parliament.
The new measures are expected not only to support aspiring entrepreneurs but also to strengthen the position of existing businesses, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. Authorities emphasize that priority will be given to those facing the greatest challenges in the labor market.
