The Masella ski resort, located in the province of Girona, once again becomes the first in Spain to kick off the ski season. This Wednesday, November 26, winter sports enthusiasts will have the chance to hit freshly prepared slopes in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. This year, Masella offers skiers 11 kilometers of trails, with snow depths ranging from 30 to 35 centimeters, made possible by favorable weather conditions in recent days.
Cold nights and abundant snowfall have not only preserved the natural snow but also allowed for active use of modern snow cannons. Over the summer, the resort underwent major upgrades: the machine room in the Pla de Masella area was renovated and old snow cannons were replaced with new, more efficient models. As a result, artificial snow production increased by a third compared to last year, while energy consumption dropped by a quarter.
The resort staff are not stopping there. By Friday, more trails are expected to open, welcoming even more visitors for the weekend. Masella is preparing for a surge of skiers, especially ahead of the long Constitution Day weekend, when attendance traditionally peaks.
At the same time as Masella, the season is also kicking off at other resorts in the Pyrenees. For example, in the French resort of Les Angles, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, the slopes will open on Friday, November 28. This resort is especially popular among Catalan skiers, and preparations there are also geared towards the festive days in early December.
Thus, Masella once again confirms its status as one of the most rapidly developing ski centers in the country. Thanks to investments in infrastructure and careful season preparation, the resort is not only the first to open its slopes, but also sets a high standard for other destinations in the region. In the coming weeks, more runs are expected to become available, so that by early December skiers can enjoy a maximum number of trails and excellent snow quality.
