In January 2026, Torrejón de la Calzada will once again become a place where the spirit of the Middle Ages comes alive. For three days, the historic center of this small town in southern Madrid is completely transformed: its streets are filled with vibrant colors, sounds, and aromas, as locals and visitors immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a distant era. More than fifty artisan stalls, street performers, musicians, and entertainers create a true celebration for the whole family.
Plaza de España and the surrounding streets become a stage for theatrical performances, workshops, and gastronomic tastings. Here you can meet leatherworkers, ceramicists, jewelers, and wood carvers who not only sell their crafts, but also demonstrate how they are made. Special play areas and creative activities are organized for children, so everyone can feel like part of this unique event.
San Sebastián Festival
The event is dedicated to the celebration of San Sebastián, the patron saint of Torrejón de la Calzada. The official date of the festivities is January 20, but preparations and public celebrations begin earlier. This is the oldest festival in the town and attracts not only locals but also visitors from neighboring municipalities and from Madrid.
These days, the city takes on a special atmosphere: residents reconnect with their roots, traditions, and customs, as the festive program blends elements of history with modern entertainment. The symbolic heart of the events is the city hall building with its arches, along with the historic San Cristóbal church, considered the oldest structure in Torrejón de la Calzada. Nearby you’ll find other historic landmarks—the Fuente de la Peñuela fountain, El Pinar park, and the old water tower, now a recognizable symbol of the city.
Immersed in the atmosphere
Visitors to the market can not only purchase unique handmade goods, but also sample traditional dishes prepared according to time-honored recipes. For three days, the streets come alive with theatrical parades, musical performances, and magical shows, creating a true fairytale ambiance. Every corner of the city becomes a stage for a historical spectacle, where past and present intertwine in the most unexpected ways.
Special attention is paid to family activities: children can join in quests, workshops, and interactive games, while adults can try their hand at crafts or simply enjoy the festive atmosphere. As evening falls, the city lights up and live music fills the main square, inviting everyone to join the celebration.
How to get there
Torrejón de la Calzada is just half an hour from Madrid. By car, it takes about 30–40 minutes via the M-40 and A-42 highways. For those who prefer public transport, bus No. 460 runs from Plaza Elíptica, with a journey time of approximately 45 minutes. Thanks to its convenient location, the market is an excellent option for a short winter getaway without having to travel far from the capital.
The town center is compact, so all the main attractions are easily accessible on foot. This makes it possible not only to visit the market, but also to explore the history and architecture of Torrejón de la Calzada, stroll along its charming streets, and discover the region’s hidden corners.
Program and Impressions
Organizers promise a packed agenda: street theater, animation, musical groups, and magic shows will follow one another throughout all three days.
