A new phase has erupted in the investigation at Spain’s National Court, focusing on the financial activities of one of the country’s major political parties. Judge Ismael Moreno, head of the Central Investigative Court No. 2, has formally requested that the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) provide a comprehensive list of all cash payments made from 2017 to 2024. In addition to the transaction list, the court is seeking documentation proving the legality and origin of these funds.
This scrutiny was prompted by suspicions of discrepancies in payment records linked to former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos and his adviser Koldo García. As part of the ongoing investigation, the court is examining how transparent the party’s financial reporting was during that period and whether regular cash transactions concealed potential violations.
In an official ruling dated November 26, Judge Moreno sided with the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office. According to prosecutors, the documents provided so far do not offer a clear picture of events. Specifically, the party’s reports frequently include cash sums transferred from bank accounts to its treasury, but the explanations for these operations remain insufficiently detailed.
