New Iberia fees: Up to 140 euros for oversized baggage on flights

Unexpected changes in luggage rules — why now every traveler in Spain should double-check their suitcase

Iberia updates its baggage policy. Oversized bags will now incur charges of up to 140 euros. The change applies to all flights and could alter travelers’ habits.

Changes to Iberia’s baggage policy directly affect thousands of Spaniards who frequently fly within the country and abroad. The new fees for non-standard bags may alter how people pack and impact the expenses of families and travelers. The airline’s decision is aimed at improving security and streamlining baggage handling at airports.

Under the updated rules, an extra fee will be charged for any baggage that does not have a standard rectangular shape or is made from soft materials. This includes round, oval, soft bags, plastic bags, and any packaging that may disrupt airport automated sorting systems. Before check-in, Iberia staff assess whether such baggage can be accepted on the flight. If allowed, the passenger receives an additional bill. In some cases, transport may be refused or the baggage may be sent on a separate flight.

Sizes and fees

The amount of the extra fee depends on the destination and type of flight. For domestic flights within Spain (except the Canary Islands), the charge is 35 euros. If the itinerary includes the Canary Islands, European, or African countries, the fee rises to 60 euros. For flights to the Americas and Asia, the fee is 125 euros. On connecting flights, rates are slightly higher: 40 euros for domestic routes, 70 euros for Europe, Africa, and the Canaries, and 140 euros for the Americas and Asia.

It is important to note that this fee is charged on top of the standard baggage fee. If a ticket already includes one bag, the passenger only pays the difference for an irregular shape. Iberia recommends using hard-shell suitcases of standard form to avoid extra charges and possible delays during check-in.

Reasons for the changes

According to RUSSPAIN.com, the changes are due to the need to improve the efficiency of the automated baggage sorting systems. Soft and irregularly shaped bags often cause malfunctions, leading to delays and additional costs for the airline. The new rules aim to reduce the number of incidents and speed up baggage handling.

Currently, the standard size for checked baggage with Iberia is no more than 158 cm in total linear dimensions and up to 23 kg in weight. A separate fee is charged for overweight bags up to 32 kg. Cabin baggage is limited to 56 x 40 x 25 cm and up to 10 kg, plus a small accessory.

Impact on passengers

The new rule may affect travellers’ habits, especially those who prefer soft bags or irregular packaging. Now, choosing luggage becomes not only a matter of convenience, but also of saving money. For families with children, athletes, and tourists carrying non-standard items, travel expenses may increase significantly.

In recent years, many European airlines have tightened their baggage policies to cut costs and speed up service. Similar measures have already been introduced by other carriers in Spain, but such high fees for baggage shape are being seen for the first time. In 2025, several major airlines also reviewed their rates, sparking wide debate among passengers and industry experts.

Passengers are advised to carefully review baggage regulations before purchasing a ticket and to choose suitcases that meet the new standards. This will help avoid unexpected expenses and delays at the airport.
