Pedro Sánchez Replaces Education Minister and Appoints New Government Spokesperson

Who Has Taken Key Positions in Spain's Government: Unexpected Appointments

Pedro Sánchez has announced a government reshuffle. The new appointments are linked to the upcoming elections in Aragón. Find out who is now in charge of education and government communications.

There have been significant changes in Spain’s government. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the appointment of Elma Sáiz as the government’s spokesperson, while Milagros Tolón has become the new Minister of Education. These shifts are linked to the departure of Pilar Alegría, who decided to run in the elections in Aragón, leaving two key roles—the Minister of Education and the government spokesperson—vacant.

Sánchez emphasized that changes in the Council of Ministers are minimal and are solely due to the need to replace those running in regional elections. He stated that the government team continues to work smoothly, and the new appointments are intended to ensure continuity and stability in governance.

Pilar Alegría steps down

Pilar Alegría, who served as Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, as well as acting as the government’s official spokesperson, announced she is stepping down from her national duties. In her statement, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the development of the country’s education and sports systems. Alegría noted that she is proud of the achievements attained and is enthusiastically returning to her home region to focus on its social and economic development.

Alegría’s decision to run in Aragón came as a surprise to many, as her four and a half years as minister had made her a prominent figure in Spanish politics. Her departure created an urgent need to find replacements in two key areas—education and government communications.

New Appointments

Millagros Tolon, who previously had not held a national ministerial post, has been appointed Minister of Education to succeed Pilar Alegría. Elma Saiz, in turn, will now be responsible for the government’s official statements and communications. Both appointments were seen as steps toward maintaining balance and efficiency in the executive branch.

Pedro Sánchez emphasized his confidence in the new team members and expressed his expectations of their professionalism in the coming period. He also recalled that since he took office in 2018, the role of government spokesperson has been held exclusively by women. Among them are Isabel Celaá, María Jesús Montero, Isabel Rodríguez, and Pilar Alegría.

Women at the Helm

Since 2018, Spain has consistently seen women hold key government posts related to communication and education. This highlights the country’s commitment to gender equality and the renewal of the political elite. The new appointments confirm that the government remains committed to broadening women’s participation in national leadership.

Pilar Alegría’s move into regional politics may mark a new stage in her career, while giving the government an opportunity to refresh its approach to key issues in education and communications. In the coming months, attention will be focused on how the new leaders handle their responsibilities.
