The Perfect Walking Route in Alicante for Everyone: An Easy Seaside Stroll to a Historic Lighthouse

Spain's 'Lazy Trail': The Easiest Way to See the Coast’s Best Views—No Training Needed

Alicante’s coastline hides a unique walking route accessible to all. This scenic nature trail leads you along stunning seaside paths, ending at a historic lighthouse with panoramic views.

The Costa Blanca coast is famous not only for its beaches, but also for its incredible opportunities for outdoor activities. Dozens of trails wind among rocky cliffs and Mediterranean pines, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature without any special training. From Cabo de la Huerta to the Sierra Helada mountain range, this region has become a true haven for hikers of all levels.

One of these routes deserves special mention for its versatility. This journey through the Sierra Helada Natural Park ends at a historic beacon towering over the horizon. We’re talking about the road to Faro de l’Albir – an easy, well-marked, and completely safe option for a family outing. It is perfect for leisurely strolls, walks with strollers, or people with limited mobility.

The starting point is at the information center in Alfaz del Pi. From here, a paved 2.5-kilometer path leads you to the northern tip of the Sierra Helada, at Punta Bombarda. One of the main advantages is the complete absence of car traffic. This lets you walk worry-free, breathing fresh air and enjoying views of the Altea Bay and the majestic Sierra de Bernia. The round trip covers about 5 kilometers. While the route can be completed in an hour and a half, it’s best to take your time and pause at the scenic lookouts.

Along the route, several spots offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean. One of the most impressive locations appears just after a short tunnel. Here, the cliffs suddenly part to reveal an endless expanse of blue, making it a hugely popular photo spot. From this vantage point, the turquoise waters washing against the park’s protected shoreline are clearly visible, where Mediterranean flora thrives alongside dramatic cliffs.

The journey’s destination is the Albir lighthouse. First opened in 1863 and fully restored in 2011 as a visitor center for the park, the building was designed by engineer Antonio Molina and served as a guiding landmark for local sailors for decades. Today, its light remains a symbol for the people of and visitors to Alfaz del Pi. In addition to its historical significance, the lighthouse offers one of the most stunning views of the coast, where the horizon stretches all the way to Peñón de Ifach and Benidorm Island.

Nearby are the ruins of the Bombarda tower. This 16th-century structure was once part of the coastal defense system against Berber pirate raids. The remaining four-meter-high walls are a reminder of the site’s strategic importance in the past. Today, its historical legacy blends seamlessly with a tranquil present, where visitors enjoy the peace, interrupted only by the sound of waves and cries of seagulls.

The path is fully accessible for wheelchairs, making this one of the most inclusive tours in the Valencian Community. At certain hours, cycling is even permitted, provided that visitors respect the natural environment. This is a great example of how sustainable tourism can coexist with environmental protection, allowing people to enjoy the landscape’s beauty without causing harm.

To get the most out of your visit, be sure to stop by the lighthouse’s information center. Its opening hours vary by season. In winter, it’s open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In summer, it also opens in the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Inside, you can learn more about the building’s history, the park’s flora and fauna, and its marine biodiversity.
