Passions are running high once again in the Madrid Assembly: the political life of Spain’s capital is returning to its usual course, this time set against the backdrop of major national events. The president of the autonomous community, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, took to the podium for the first time since news broke of the arrest of former Socialist minister José Luis Ábalos, once a close ally of Pedro Sánchez. Last Sunday, Ayuso participated in an anti-corruption rally organized by the Partido Popular, where she sharply criticized the “indecisive” and called for a tougher stance amid growing political polarization.
The focus has also shifted to the healthcare system. A scandal erupted after the release of an audio recording in which the head of Ribera, the medical group managing the public hospital in Torrejón de Ardoz, called for increasing waiting lists by reducing surgeries and refusing unprofitable patients. The leadership of the regional health ministry urgently summoned the hospital administration for a meeting, promising to take all necessary measures and strengthen oversight.
Opposition parties, particularly the Madrid branch of the Socialists and the Más Madrid movement, have announced plans to sue the Ayuso government. Minister and leader of the Socialists in Madrid, Óscar López, called the situation “a disgrace” and accused the authorities of turning patients into clients and healthcare into a business for the privileged. According to him, privatization is destroying the right to healthcare for all.
Political tensions
Meanwhile, the Vox party continues to advance its own agenda. This year, representatives of the far-right plan to propose four amendments to the 2026 budget, two of which deal with funding the deportation of undocumented migrants. The head of Vox’s Madrid branch, Isabel Pérez Moñino, is demanding that Ayuso make agreements with the countries from which migrants arrive in order to speed up their expulsion.
As the political climate in Madrid and across the country grows increasingly tense, every new statement or initiative triggers a strong reaction among both lawmakers and the public. Issues of corruption, healthcare management, and migration policy are sparking fierce debate and legal battles.
Healthcare scandal
The scandal surrounding the Torrejón de Ardoz hospital has become one of the most discussed topics of the week. An audio recording in which a top manager from the medical company Ribera openly talks about the need to increase profits by reducing the number of surgeries and turning away patients sparked a wave of outrage. Vox’s migration policy
The Vox party, known for its radical views, has once again raised the issue of deporting undocumented migrants. Their proposed amendments to the budget allocate additional funds for this purpose. Furthermore, the party is demanding that the Madrid government enter active negotiations with foreign countries to speed up deportations.
These initiatives are sparking heated debates both in the assembly and beyond. Opponents of Vox consider such measures overly harsh and damaging to the region’s reputation, while supporters deem them necessary to restore order and protect the interests of local residents.
