Rains Persist Across Spain: Where to Expect Precipitation and This Week’s Weather Outlook

Heavy rain, fog, and sudden temperature shifts: What’s in store for Spain’s regions

A series of rain showers and fog is sweeping across Spain. Heavy precipitation is expected in western and northern regions. Temperatures will remain above average, but nights are set to become cooler.

The weather in Spain this week is expected to be changeable, with frequent rainfall. The atmospheric front, which has already brought the first showers, continues to move across the country, reaching more and more regions. Residents in the north and west have already felt the impact of the bad weather: heavy rains persist and the sky remains covered with thick clouds.

Meteorologists note that the precipitation zone stretches from north to south, affecting regions such as Asturias, Cantabria, País Vasco, Castilla y León, Madrid, Extremadura, and the western part of Andalucía. Depending on the movement of the front, rain may also reach neighboring areas, although it is not expected to make it to the Mediterranean yet.

Heavy rainfall and alerts

Particularly intense showers are expected in Extremadura and western Andalucía. In the province of Huelva, a yellow weather warning has been issued: up to 15 liters of rain per square meter could fall in a short period of time. The entire Galician coastline is also under alert due to hazardous sea conditions.

Thick morning fog blankets the country’s inland areas, especially in the central and eastern regions. During the day, temperatures will drop noticeably in most interior regions and along the Cantabrian coast. Nights, however, will become warmer, and overall, the country will experience relatively mild weather for this time of year. Snow, if it appears at all, will be limited to very high elevations, and frost is unlikely. In the Mediterranean coastal areas and on the Islas Baleares, temperatures will climb above 20 degrees.

Weather changes expected by the end of the week

Thursday will bring a transitional day for Spain: one weather front will be moving out while another approaches. The morning will start with fog in the central regions and on the Balearic Islands. By midday, the new front will reach Galicia, bringing rain once again, especially in the west. Brief showers are also possible in neighboring regions. Nighttime temperatures will drop due to clearing skies, but frost is still not expected. Daytime temperatures will rise in the center, while the Mediterranean coast will see a slight cooling. Overall, temperatures will remain above seasonal averages: the Mediterranean coastline will still be above 20 degrees, with central and southern areas around 15.

On Friday, the front that reached Galicia the day before will continue moving eastward. Rain will cover large areas of western Spain, with heavy and prolonged showers expected in some places—especially in Galicia, Extremadura, and western Andalusia. Nighttime temperatures will remain unchanged, but daytime temperatures will drop slightly, particularly in regions experiencing downpours.

Weekend: contrasts and new surprises

Over the weekend, further drops in nighttime temperatures are expected, leading to frost in northern and central regions. However, during the day, temperatures will rise quickly, with Andalusia and the Mediterranean coast possibly seeing values above 20 degrees again. The weather will be changeable: some areas will get cooler, while others may become warmer than usual for late winter. Precipitation forecasts remain uncertain: rain may fall in the west and south, and occasional showers are also possible along the Mediterranean coast.

Canary Islands: clouds and coolness

Residents of the Canary Islands (Islas Canarias) will also notice changes. Cloudiness and rain are forecast for the northern slopes of the archipelago, particularly in mountainous areas. After a brief respite on Thursday, precipitation will return on Friday and continue over the weekend on the higher islands. Air temperatures will also drop slightly, creating a fresh feeling.

For reference, AEMET is Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología), responsible for weather forecasting, issuing warnings about natural phenomena, and collecting climate data nationwide. Founded in 1887, it has since been regarded as the main source of weather information for the public, media, and government institutions. Every day, the agency’s specialists analyze data from weather stations, satellites, and radars to keep citizens promptly informed about possible changes in weather conditions.
