Santa Comba: A Secluded Gem of the Atlantic in Northern Spain

Una playa que sorprende incluso a los viajeros más experimentados

In the height of summer, when Spain’s popular beaches are filled to capacity, the coast of Galicia offers a unique retreat — Santa Comba beach. Here, nature has preserved its pristine beauty, and the tranquil, secluded atmosphere attracts both those seeking peace and fans of outdoor activities.

The summer season in Spain is traditionally marked by an influx of vacationers to the coast. On many of the country’s beaches, it is difficult to find space for an umbrella, with noise and bustle becoming a regular part of the holiday experience. However, in the north, in Galicia, there are places where nature remains untouched and the atmosphere is truly unique.

Santa Comba Beach (Santa Comba), located in the province of A Coruña, is one such spot. This nearly one-and-a-half kilometer stretch of coastline is surrounded by cliffs and green hills, while its white sand and clear water create a sense of seclusion even in the peak of the season.

The main feature of Santa Comba is its harmonious blend of wild nature and historical landmarks. On a small islet at the western end of the beach stands an old Romanesque chapel built in the 13th century. It seems to hover above the waves, adding a mysterious touch to the landscape and serving as a reminder of this site’s centuries-old history.

The beach is popular among surfers thanks to its open position and constant surf. However, swimming here requires caution: strong currents and a rocky seabed are typical for the Galician coast. For those who prefer a quiet getaway, Santa Comba offers the chance to enjoy tranquility, strolls along the shore, and the beauty of nature.

Special attention should be given to the small cove of As Fontes, which many call one of the most beautiful in Spain. It is accessible only at low tide, when the water recedes and a narrow path to a secluded beach appears. Thanks to its remote location, the area is rarely crowded and the nature has remained pristine.

Getting to Santa Comba is easy. From the center of Ferrol, follow the road towards Covas, then follow the signs to the beach. Parking is available for drivers, and the area offers showers and a lifeguard station. You can also take a city bus to Covas and walk the remaining distance.

Santa Comba and As Fontes are the perfect choice for those seeking not only scenic views but also a chance to relax away from the crowds. Here, you can feel the true power of the Atlantic, enjoy the peace and quiet, and discover lesser-known parts of the Spanish coastline.
