Major Operation in Abanilla Uncovers Secret Cannabis Production
In the municipality of Abanilla, located in the Murcia region, law enforcement officers carried out a successful operation to dismantle a large illegal marijuana plantation. As a result of the police actions, seven people were detained on suspicion of organizing and running an illegal business focused on cultivating and distributing drugs. The operation followed an extended period of surveillance and evidence gathering, which led to the discovery of carefully disguised sites used for cannabis cultivation.
During the raids, officers found three fully equipped greenhouses set up inside a residential house and on adjacent plots. These spaces contained more than 500 marijuana plants at various stages of growth, as well as a significant amount of product ready for sale. In addition to the plants, police seized a large sum of cash, advanced video surveillance equipment, and all the necessary tools for growing and processing the drugs.
Techniques and Methods: Inside the Network’s Operations
The perpetrators used advanced technologies to ensure the security and efficiency of their operation. The entire area was equipped with a video surveillance system that allowed them to monitor all movements around the premises. Inside, they had installed sophisticated lighting, ventilation, humidity and temperature control systems, as well as filters to eliminate odors. This enabled them to maintain optimal conditions for rapid plant growth and minimized the risk of detection by neighbors or passersby.
One room in the main house was set up as a laboratory for preparing marijuana for sale. Here, they kept precision scales, packaging materials, and other tools needed for portioning and further transport of the product. Additional greenhouses were located in adjacent rooms, with each containing several hundred plants. All areas were carefully insulated and protected from unauthorized entry.
Discovery and Arrest: Details of the Investigation
The investigation began back in October, when police received information about possible illegal activity in one of Abanilla’s districts. After several weeks of surveillance and gathering evidence, they decided to carry out a search. During the operation, all group members were detained. According to the investigation, they were not only growing but also organizing the distribution of drugs within the region.
Police paid special attention to detecting illegal connections to the power grid. To operate powerful lamps and ventilation systems, the suspects set up unauthorized connections to the electricity supply, allowing them to significantly cut costs and conceal the true amount of energy used. This factor also became one of the charges brought against the detainees.
Impact and significance of the operation for the region
The shutdown of the underground plantation in Abanilla was a significant event for the Murcia region, which in recent years has seen a surge in similar offenses. Seizing a large batch of drugs and arresting the organizers prevented a substantial amount of marijuana from reaching the black market. Experts believe such operations help lower crime rates and strengthen public safety.
During the investigation, all equipment used for cultivating and guarding the plantation was confiscated. The detainees are now awaiting court decisions, while police continue to investigate possible links between this group and other criminal organizations in the region and beyond.
