The morning in Sevilla began with a tragedy that shocked even longtime residents. Amid heavy rain and near-zero visibility, the driver of a car hit a man without noticing. She continued driving through the city, unaware that the victim’s body was trapped beneath her vehicle.
It was only after six kilometers, when the car was near the intersection of Ramón y Cajal and San Francisco Javier streets, that passersby and other drivers noticed something strange under the car. When the vehicle was stopped, they were horrified to discover a man’s body. Paramedics and police arrived on the scene, but there was nothing they could do—the victim had died instantly.
Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased was a homeless man. At the time of the accident, he was likely jaywalking or standing too close to the roadway. The heavy downpour made the situation worse: the driver admitted she heard an unusual noise but dismissed it, thinking it was just the bad weather and puddles.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. A specialized traffic accident unit is analyzing surveillance footage to pinpoint the exact location of the collision. According to one theory, the tragedy began in the Alameda area, and the driver unknowingly transported the man’s body to the Nervión district.
Investigators are currently determining whether the victim had any identification documents and are working to establish his identity. They also need to assess whether the driver could have avoided the tragedy had the weather conditions been different, and whether inattention or fatigue may have played a part. In any case, this incident serves as a reminder of how dangerous roads can be in bad weather and the importance of staying extremely alert behind the wheel.
