On Sunday evening, a large-scale anti-drug operation unfolded in the small town of El Casar de Escalona (Toledo province). National Police forces arrived at one of the local residential complexes, where, according to their information, suspects involved in illegal drug trafficking were hiding.
The situation quickly escalated when alleged members of the criminal group opened fire in the street. Police officers were forced to return fire to protect themselves and bystanders. As a result of the shootout, one suspect was killed on the spot, while three other men sustained gunshot wounds of varying severity.
Two of the injured, aged 25 and 38, were rushed by ambulance to the Toledo University Clinic. The third wounded man, 31, was taken to a hospital in Talavera de la Reina. There is currently no information on their condition. Notably, none of the police officers were injured, despite the intensity of the shootout.
Additional reinforcements quickly arrived at the scene — GEO special unit officers, along with members of the Guardia Civil and local police. The area was cordoned off to ensure residents’ safety and support emergency response teams. According to emergency services, the first report of gunfire came in at 19:54, triggering a major operation to neutralize the threat.
An investigation is currently underway to determine all the circumstances of the incident. Law enforcement is working to find out how the suspects obtained weapons and why they chose to put up such fierce resistance. Residents of El Casar de Escalona are still discussing what happened, noting that such incidents are extremely rare in their usually quiet town.
