Six Madrid Metro stations closed after unexpected disruption on Line 3

Authorities suspend part of the Madrid Metro following a major track incident

Metro service on a key section of Madrid’s Line 3 was suddenly suspended, affecting six stations and sparking disputes among transport operators. Authorities promise to restore service by the end of the week.

In the Spanish capital, thousands of residents and visitors faced major difficulties after the unexpected closure of part of Metro Line 3. The decision to suspend service between Moncloa and Sol stations was made due to technical works and track repairs near Plaza de España. This development immediately sparked widespread discussion, as Line 3 is considered one of the busiest in Madrid, carrying a huge number of passengers every day.

According to El Pais, the stoppage affected six stations: Sol, Callao, Plaza de España, Ventura Rodríguez, Argüelles, and Moncloa. The cause was infrastructure upgrades and repair works on the section between Plaza de España and Ventura Rodríguez. Railway industry sources say the main disruption occurred at Plaza de España, where, according to unofficial reports, a deformation and damage to the track slab was discovered. However, representatives of Metro de Madrid have not yet officially confirmed this information.

Reaction and criticism

The temporary suspension of service drew sharp criticism from Renfe’s management. Company head Álvaro Fernández Heredia publicly criticized the actions of the regional authorities, accusing them of lacking transparency and failing to adequately inform passengers. He pointed out that the government’s focus was on statistics regarding disruptions on commuter trains, rather than explaining the reasons for the sudden metro closure. Tensions between Renfe and the regional transport ministry escalated after Madrid authorities earlier this week voiced dissatisfaction with the performance of commuter lines C4, C3, and C5, where, according to their data, up to five incidents are recorded daily.

In response to criticism, Metro de Madrid announced the launch of a free bus route between Moncloa and Callao, running on the same schedule as the metro. In addition, passengers are advised to transfer to other metro lines at all six closed stations. City bus routes EMT, particularly lines 133 and Circular, which connect key points of the closed section, have also become alternatives.

Consequences for the city

The restrictions on line 3 are particularly noticeable for residents of central districts and those who use this route daily for work or study. Last year, line 3 handled 83 million passengers, 10.3% more than the previous year. Authorities emphasize that the renovation work is necessary to improve safety and extend the service life of the infrastructure. According to Metro de Madrid officials, continuous access to the tracks is required to carry out all tasks and ensure the safety of staff and passengers.

The transport situation in Madrid has become increasingly tense in recent months. Regional authorities are demanding urgent measures from the Ministry of Transport to improve the condition of suburban lines and prevent further disruptions. Against this backdrop, the ministry has announced a large-scale modernization project for line C5, which serves almost a third of all suburban train passengers. In the coming months, this line is expected to be partially closed for four months, which could pose new challenges for residents of the city’s southern areas.

Context and comparisons

Transport problems in Madrid are not limited to the metro. Recently, the city has experienced major disruptions due to protests and rallies, which have also led to route changes and delays. As highlighted in the report on traffic jams caused by mass demonstrations, such situations require residents to stay flexible and adapt their plans quickly.

According to El Pais, the current disruption on line 3 is one of the most significant in recent years. Looking back at similar incidents, it is worth noting that in 2024, certain sections of the Madrid metro were already closed for urgent repairs, causing dissatisfaction among passengers and sparking debate between transport companies. Then, as now, authorities promised to speed up the restoration of services and strengthen alternative routes. Such incidents highlight the importance of timely maintenance of city infrastructure and the need for coordination between various transport services.
