Snowstorm shuts down roads across several regions
Northern and northeastern regions of Spain are facing major road disruptions due to heavy snowfall. Five highway sections in Granada, Asturias, Cantabria, and Navarra are completely closed to traffic. Around fifty other, mostly secondary, roads are subject to restrictions: trucks and buses are banned, and snow chains are mandatory for passenger vehicles.
Specifically, in Granada, the A-4025 route to Sierra Nevada is inaccessible. In Asturias, the AS-348 near Cangas del Narcea is closed. In Cantabria, traffic is halted on the CA-280 (Los Tojos) and CA-643 (San Roque de Riomiera). In Navarra, the Balagua pass (N-137) is blocked. The situation is made worse as snowfall continues and temperatures remain below zero.
Restrictions and mandatory chains: who is affected and where
In Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, and Catalonia, dozens of roads are closed to buses and trucks. On many sections, passenger cars are allowed only with snow chains. Drivers must be especially cautious: in some places, only careful driving is permitted, while in others, traffic is entirely halted.
The situation is slightly better on the main highways, but there are still complications. On the AP-66 in Asturias and León, as well as the A-67 in Cantabria and Palencia, travel is only permitted with maximum caution. Drivers are advised to plan their routes in advance and stay updated on road conditions.
Catalonia and Navarra: New Restrictions and Impact of the Snowstorm
In the province of Lleida in Catalonia, chains have been made mandatory on nine roads due to icy surfaces and fresh snowfall. Since early morning, restrictions have affected routes such as L-504 (Lladore), L-510 (Alins), L-500 and L-501 (Vall de Boí), C-142b (Naut Aran), and C-28 (Vielha). Later, C-147 (Esterri d’Àneu) and C-13 (from Llavorsí to Esterri d’Àneu) were added. On the N-230 near Vilaller, long vehicles are not allowed to pass.
In Navarra, snow even fell in Pamplona, causing difficulties on major and secondary roads. The A-15 motorway is closed from Irurtzun, with traffic rerouted onto the A-10. Approaching Navarra from Gipuzkoa along this route is also impossible. Despite the challenging weather, no serious incidents have been reported so far.
