Spain Braces for Sudden Warm-Up and Rain: Forecasters Warn of Weather Changes

This week's weather shock: scorching heat to be replaced by heavy rains and strong winds

The week will start with warm temperatures and clear skies across Spain. By midweek, rain and cooler weather are expected. Residents should prepare for sudden shifts and unpredictable weather surprises.

At the beginning of the week, residents across Spain can look forward to truly spring-like warmth. Most regions will enjoy clear, dry weather, with temperatures rising above the seasonal average. The only exception will be the Mediterranean coast, where brief showers and cloudiness are possible.

In the northern regions, especially in Galicia and the north of Castilla y León, the morning will start with dense fog that may linger until noon. Meanwhile, in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the southern part of the Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia, and eastern Andalusia, local showers are expected. During the day, temperatures in Bilbao and other northern cities will approach 23°C, while in the Valle del Guadalquivir it could reach up to 25°C. On the Canary Islands, the heat will persist, with some areas hitting 30°C and above.

Weather shift: rain and strong winds ahead

On Tuesday, conditions will start to change. An Atlantic front will slowly move east, bringing heavy rainfall to Galicia, Asturias, and the north of the province of León. Thunderstorms and hail are possible in western Galicia, while wind gusts in some areas could reach hurricane force—up to 120 km/h. The rest of the country will remain dry and warm, but temperatures will start to trend downward.

On Wednesday, rain will sweep across the west and center of the Iberian Peninsula. These regions can expect heavy downpours, with some areas also seeing thunderstorms and hail. Galicia, the north of Cáceres, and the south of Castilla y León will receive the most precipitation. Dense morning fog may develop in eastern valleys, potentially complicating driving conditions. Despite the approaching front, cities like Alicante, Almería, Bilbao, and Córdoba will see daytime highs around 25°C, while nights will remain unusually warm — in Palma, San Sebastián, Santander, and Málaga, temperatures won’t drop below 15°C.

Colder weather and rain to hit by the weekend

On Thursday, the front will move into eastern regions and the Mediterranean. Navarra, Aragón, Cataluña, and the Balearic Islands will experience heavy, prolonged rain, with thunderstorms and hail possible. In the mountains of eastern Spain, snow is expected above 2,000 meters. In other parts of the east, precipitation will be less intense and more localized.

That day, temperatures will drop sharply across the country, especially in central and eastern areas. Highs will fall by 8–10 degrees compared to Wednesday, and after several days of unusual warmth, readings will return to seasonal norms. Spain is in for a real weather shakeup: in just a few days, temperatures will swing from summer heat to autumn chill.
