Spanish Driving Licenses in the USA: Where You Can Drive Without an International Permit

En qué estados de EE. UU. se aceptan los carnés de conducir españoles: detalles para viajeros

Planning a trip to the USA and want to rent a car with your Spanish license? Find out which states allow you to drive without an international permit, when you’ll need extra documentation, and how to obtain it. A detailed guide for drivers from Spain.

Many residents of Spain, when traveling to the United States, wonder whether their national driver’s license can be used to rent a car and drive independently. However, traffic regulations and documentation requirements in the US differ from those in Europe, and each state sets its own rules for allowing foreign drivers.

In most American states, Spanish driver’s licenses are recognized as valid for temporary stays. This means that tourists can drive by presenting their national license, provided their visit does not exceed the permitted time limit. Nevertheless, in some cases, police officers or rental companies may require an International Driving Permit (IDP), especially if the license is not issued in English.

There are states where an International Driving Permit is mandatory. These include Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. In these regions, a Spanish license must be accompanied by a valid international document. Most of these states are not among the most popular tourist destinations, but for those planning a trip there, obtaining an IDP is a necessary requirement.

In other US states, it is sufficient to have your Spanish driver’s license with you, but it is recommended to check the requirements with the car rental company in advance and familiarize yourself with local traffic regulations. Some rental providers may require an International Driving Permit even in states where it is not formally mandatory.

The International Driving Permit is issued by the Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico, DGT). To obtain it, you must pay a government fee, which in 2025 amounts to €10.51. The document can be applied for either online or in person at a traffic office. In both cases, an appointment is required.

To apply online, you will need an electronic certificate, a chip-enabled DNI, or Cl@ve credentials. After paying the fee and completing the application form, you must select the office where you will collect your permit. The document will be ready in two working days. To obtain the IDP, you must provide a recent photo sized 32×26 mm and a valid passport or identity card.

If applying in person, you must arrive at the appointed time with a completed application form, a receipt for payment (or pay on site), and identification documents. The process takes little time, and the permit is issued either immediately or within a few days.

Spanish tourists planning a trip to the United States should be aware of differences in road signs, right-of-way rules, and the speed measurement system. Before traveling, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the traffic regulations of your chosen state and prepare all necessary documents for car rental and interaction with local authorities.

Thus, for most travelers from Spain, it is sufficient to have a national driver’s license, but obtaining an international driving permit can help avoid misunderstandings and ensure peace of mind while driving in the US.
