In Madrid, the Teatro Real hosted the ceremony for the prestigious Nueva economía Forum award. This year, the honor went to the President of the European Council, António Costa. The evening’s main event was a speech by King Felipe VI, who emphasized the need for unity among European countries amid growing divisions and external threats.
The monarch did not hide his concern about the rise of anti-European sentiment and actions that could undermine the foundations of the union. According to him, it is now especially important not only to protect the common heritage, but also to preserve the European way of life, which shapes identity and strengthens citizens’ standing on the world stage. Felipe VI stressed that the further development of the European project is not merely a formality, but a vital task for all inhabitants of the continent.
Key figures from Spanish and European politics were present in the hall: Vice Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz, Minister of Economy Carlos Cuerpo, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. After receiving the award, António Costa delivered a speech in which he pointed out that the European Council plays a central role in the EU structure. He also emphasized the need to strengthen unity despite the difficulties and disappointments the union faces.
Kosta specifically emphasized that the United States remains the European Union’s main partner, but stressed the importance of a multilateral approach and adherence to international rules. Without naming specific countries, he hinted at growing challenges from other global players and urged Europe to be ready for independent action if trust in allies weakens and threats from opponents increase. In the end, the evening concluded with applause and a sense that European solidarity was once again at the forefront of public attention.
