A heated debate erupted today in the Spanish Senate over the performance of Equality Minister Ana Redondo. The controversy stems from a series of failures in the electronic bracelet system designed to protect victims of domestic violence. Opposition lawmakers are demanding the immediate resignation of the minister, accusing her of concealing information and negligence.
This issue became the focus of the Autonomous Communities Committee meeting. Representatives of the largest opposition party claimed that the minister not only failed to acknowledge the scale of the problem, but also tried to cover up the scandal, insisting that the system was operating without failures. However, according to them, documents and reports from relevant committees indicate otherwise.
Particular outrage was sparked by the absence of both Ana Redondo herself and regional equality advisors from the ruling party at the session dedicated to combating violence against women. The opposition viewed this as a display of indifference to the victims and an attempt to evade responsibility. According to senators, the government should not only acknowledge its mistakes but also publicly apologize to the victims and their families.
During the discussion, calls were made for an independent review of the electronic bracelet system, as well as for detailed information on the number of affected individuals and legal cases impacted by technical failures. The opposition insists that if Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez does not dismiss the minister, it will be seen as evidence of his personal involvement in the scandal.
A vote on a resolution calling for the minister’s resignation and an audit is expected soon. The outcome could significantly reshape the balance of power within the government and influence public opinion on issues of protecting women from violence.
