Spanish Transport Minister blames severe track failure for Córdoba accident

What is being concealed in the investigation of the year's deadliest train disaster

Spain’s Transport Minister said the accident near Córdoba may have been caused by a sudden rail defect. Authorities promise a fully transparent investigation. Families of the victims await answers.

Investigation continues in Spain into one of the most tragic rail accidents in recent years. Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Óscar Puente made a strong statement: if a fault in the railway infrastructure caused the Iryo train crash near Adamuz (Córdoba), it represents a critical failure that went undetected during prior inspections. The accident claimed 43 lives and left dozens injured. Authorities stress that such an incident should not have occurred given the current level of oversight.

Puente firmly rejected allegations of negligence or inadequate track maintenance. He stated that all required inspections were conducted and the rails passed without any issues. Experts are now focused on analyzing the quality of the rail welding and the metal itself. Samples have already been sent to laboratories for thorough examination. The minister emphasized that such incidents are rare for Spain’s modern rail system, where safety standards are among the highest in Europe.

Inside the tragedy

According to the minister, a technical malfunction of the Iryo train itself is almost ruled out. The train was new, had passed all necessary inspections, and met the highest safety standards. However, characteristic marks were found on the train’s bogies—identical to those on three other trains that had traveled this stretch 45–60 minutes before the tragedy. At the same time, earlier trains showed no such damage. This suggests that the rail defect appeared suddenly, just an hour before the accident, and could not have been detected during routine inspections.

Puente emphasized that all track laying and welding jobs were performed by certified specialists, with each weld marked by the name of its executor. The quality of the steel also raises no concerns—no such incidents have previously been recorded on this section. Nevertheless, the minister insists on a comprehensive laboratory analysis to exclude even the slightest possibility of a manufacturing flaw or hidden defect.

Accountability and consequences

The Minister of Transport stated that everyone responsible for the tragedy—whether through action or inaction—will be held accountable. He assured that he would not shy away from responsibility if it is found that the accident was caused by an infrastructure error or train operation issue. According to him, regardless of the outcome of the investigation, the state is obliged to provide honest answers to the families of the victims and those affected, and do everything possible to prevent such incidents in the future.

Puente also noted that Spain’s railway network was built with the participation of companies with impeccable reputations, and that quality control has always been at the highest level. However, the Adamuz tragedy showed that even the strictest standards do not guarantee absolute safety. The minister promised that the investigation’s findings will be made public and those responsible will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Questions without answers

While experts continue to examine rail samples and welds, public tension is rising. The families of the victims demand transparency and justice, while the public is asking: how could such a serious defect have gone unnoticed? Authorities assure that the investigation will be as open as possible and that all conclusions will be objective.

The disaster near Córdoba has become a real test for Spain’s transportation system. Questions about infrastructure quality and the effectiveness of oversight remain unanswered. There is hope that this tragedy will prompt real change, rather than simply becoming another entry in the long list of railway accidents.
