A series of daring thefts in Barcelona hotels has raised serious concerns for Spain’s tourism industry. Over several months, an unknown man managed to steal a substantial sum, using an unusually calm and inconspicuous approach. The incident has prompted hoteliers and guests to reconsider safety precautions and pay closer attention to vulnerabilities in hotel security.
According to RUSSPAIN, since November 2025, cases of money, valuables, and electronic devices disappearing from hotels in the Catalan capital have been regularly reported. The thief moved freely through public areas without arousing suspicion, observing guests’ behavior. He waited for moments when tourists left their belongings unattended to quickly and quietly take them. This method allowed him to avoid detection by staff and surveillance cameras for an extended period.
Methods and consequences
The perpetrator, aged 46, did not resort to violence or threats. His strategy was to blend in as an ordinary guest, not standing out in the crowd. He operated in lobbies, breakfast halls, and other areas where people often let their guard down. In addition to cash and wallets, smartphones, jewelry, and other valuables were among the stolen items. In some cases, the culprit used stolen bank cards to withdraw funds and make purchases, netting him an additional 400 euros.
Constant complaints from hotels and tourists prompted the Catalan police to launch a special operation. As part of Operation Kanpai, additional patrols were deployed and security camera footage was analyzed. This helped identify common traits in the suspect’s behavior and track his movements between different hotels in the city.
Arrest and investigation
On March 23, police detained a man suspected of a series of thefts. He is accused of at least seven incidents involving the theft of hotel guests’ property. Investigators found that the detainee had previously been prosecuted for similar offenses, allowing him to be quickly classified as a particularly dangerous repeat offender. The suspect’s nationality has not been disclosed, but it is known that he operated exclusively in Barcelona.
During the investigation, police officers reviewed banking transactions made with stolen cards, which helped reconstruct the full picture of the criminal activity. Operation Kanpai was launched in response to rising crime in tourist areas and demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement and the hotel industry.
Recommendations and reaction
After the suspect was detained, police urged hotel owners and tourists not to leave personal belongings unattended in public areas. Authorities recommend strengthening visitor control and promptly reporting any suspicious situations. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, such incidents can negatively impact the city’s image and undermine trust in the tourism infrastructure, especially during peak season.
The court hearing is scheduled for March 26. The man faces charges of theft and fraud. Authorities emphasize that cooperation between the police and hotels plays a key role in preventing such crimes and protecting city guests.
In recent years, Barcelona has faced several waves of thefts in tourist areas. In 2024, a similar series of crimes was recorded in the Eixample district, where perpetrators also posed as hotel guests. At that time, police increased patrols and implemented new video surveillance systems, which helped reduce the number of such incidents. However, the growing number of tourists and the continual evolution of criminal techniques require regular updates to security measures and close collaboration among all industry stakeholders.
