Three people die from Asian hornet stings in Galicia in two weeks

Surge in Vespa Velutina Fatalities in Galicia: Why Autumn Attacks Took Everyone by Surprise

Galicia has reported three fatal cases resulting from Asian hornet stings in a short period. The unusual activity of these insects in autumn has alarmed experts. Authorities urge the public, especially those with allergies, to be vigilant.

In Galicia, autumn has brought alarming news over the past two weeks: three men have died after being stung by Asian hornets, also known as velutinas (Vespa velutina). Such tragedies usually occur in summer, when the insect population peaks, but this recent spike in deaths in October came as a shock even to seasoned experts.

Local authorities note that the number of detected nests keeps rising, and the hornets themselves are showing a remarkable ability to adapt to new conditions. Despite efforts to combat this invasive species, stopping its spread completely has so far proved impossible. This year, more than 16,000 nests have already been destroyed in the region, but experts believe the actual number is much higher, with many colonies remaining undetected.

Nests hidden underground or in hard-to-reach places pose a particular risk. Such hiding spots led to the deaths of all three victims: two men came across the insects while working on their land, and a third while hunting. In each case, the victims were unaware of the danger nearby, leaving them no chance of survival.

Why is the situation getting out of control?

Experts studying the impact of the Asian hornet on health and the environment note that the fight against this species is hampered by a lack of resources and poor coordination between services. Nest removal teams cannot keep up with the surge in requests, especially in autumn when hornet activity unexpectedly spikes. At the same time, many allergy sufferers are unaware of their vulnerability, increasing the risk of tragedy.

Regional authorities claim that the introduction of new traps and control methods is already paying off: the number of reports about hornet sightings has dropped by a third compared to last year. However, experts believe these measures only partially contain the insect’s spread. In addition, widespread use of traps could negatively affect other insect species, posing further environmental problems.

Galicia leads in deaths from insect stings

For several years, the region has ranked first in Spain for fatal outcomes following insect stings. However, official statistics do not break down cases by species, making analysis and effective response more difficult. According to experts, behind every deadly incident there are many more cases in which victims survive only thanks to prompt medical treatment.

Beekeepers and environmentalists report that the situation with velutina hornets in Galicia is becoming increasingly critical. Despite some successes, the spread of these hornets has not been fully contained. Experts warn that the problem may only get worse next year unless additional measures are taken and funding to combat this dangerous species is increased.

Residents of the region are advised to exercise extreme caution when working outdoors, especially those prone to allergic reactions. If a nest or a swarm of hornets is detected, it is recommended to immediately contact specialists and not attempt to handle the situation alone.
