A fatal accident on the N-629 highway near Medina de Pomar has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of existing road safety measures in Spain. The incident, which claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy from Bilbao and left his mother and younger sister seriously injured, became one of the most talked-about events at the start of the Easter holidays. According to RUSSPAIN, the tragedy occurred as thousands of families began traveling across the country, amplifying public concern.
According to information provided by the Guardia Civil, the accident happened around 17:30 at a section of the road passing through the locality of Santurde. Two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the instant death of the child and severe consequences for the other occupants. The boy’s mother, aged 45, and his six-year-old sister were trapped in the car and had to be freed by firefighters. For their evacuation, an Osakidetza medical helicopter was dispatched from Álava, allowing swift transfer of the injured to Cruces Hospital.
Incident details
The second vehicle involved in the collision was driven by a 58-year-old man, who also suffered injuries and was taken by ambulance to Margen Izquierda hospital. Multiple emergency services responded to the scene: road police units from Burgos, firefighters from Miranda de Ebro and Burgos, as well as medical teams from Emergencias Sanitarias-Sacyl. Within a short time, the highway section was blocked, causing heavy traffic congestion and complicating travel at the start of the holiday period.
The boy who was in the most critical condition was urgently transported to Hospital Universitario de Burgos, but despite efforts, doctors could not save him—his injuries were incompatible with life. According to eyewitness accounts, more than ten calls were made to the emergency services hotline, underscoring the scale and shocking nature of the incident. Response teams included a medical helicopter (HEMS), an intensive care team (UME), the on-duty PAC team, and a basic ambulance (SVB).
Response and aftermath
This was already the second fatal road accident of the day in the province of Burgos. Earlier that same day, a French woman died and several others were injured in a collision involving a truck on the N-1 near Quintanapalla. This series of road tragedies in the region has once again raised questions about the need to reconsider safety measures, especially during periods of heavy travel.
According to DGT statistics, only one death was recorded on intercity roads in Bizkaia during the first quarter of 2026, one fewer than in the same period last year. In 2025, nine people died in traffic accidents in the region. The last case before the current tragedy was the death of restaurant owner Horma Ondo, Mikel Bustinza, in January 2026 after a collision with a parked truck near Amorebieta.
Background and trends
According to RUSSPAIN, such accidents involving families and children during holiday periods are not uncommon in Spain. In recent years, there has been an increase in traffic accidents at the start of major travel rushes, when roads become more congested and drivers often lose focus due to fatigue or haste. In 2025, similar tragedies occurred in Catalonia and Andalusia, where there were also fatalities among underage passengers.
The country’s authorities continue to introduce new measures to reduce accident rates, including increased monitoring of hazardous areas and information campaigns for drivers. However, experience shows that even the most advanced systems are not always able to prevent tragedies, especially with heavy traffic and human error. Public debate is once again focused on the need for a comprehensive approach to road safety, including infrastructure modernization and increased responsibility for all road users.
In recent years, Spain has faced a series of serious accidents on interregional highways, particularly during periods of heavy travel. In 2024, a major accident involving a bus and several passenger vehicles occurred near Valencia, injuring dozens of people. In 2025, Galicia recorded an incident in which a collision between two cars resulted in the death of a family of three. Analysis by russpain.com indicates that most such incidents are linked to speeding, driver fatigue, and adverse weather conditions. Despite government efforts, the issue remains pressing and demands ongoing attention.
