US President Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of an international scandal, accusing Denmark of failing to counter Russian influence in the Greenland region. According to him, København has ignored NATO’s calls to strengthen security in the North Atlantic for the past two decades. Now, in the American leader’s view, it’s time for decisive action, and Washington is prepared to take control of the situation.
Trump didn’t stop at words: he openly stated that the use of military force to establish control over Greenland was a real possibility. These remarks sparked a strong reaction not only in Denmark but across Europe. Meanwhile, Russian officials emphasized that Greenland remains Danish territory, and rumors of Russian and Chinese ships off the island’s coast were refuted by diplomats who participated in NATO meetings.
Europe’s Response
Amid escalating rhetoric from the US, six European countries—including France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway—decided to send their military units to Greenland. This move surprised many observers and demonstrated that Europe does not intend to remain on the sidelines of the conflict over this strategically important island.
Germany has drawn particular attention after media reports claimed it secretly withdrew its troops from the region without explanation. This move has sparked widespread speculation and debate about Berlin’s true intentions and its stance in the unfolding situation. So far, however, officials have refrained from commenting, choosing not to disclose any details.
Economic Pressure
Alongside military preparations, Trump announced a 10 percent tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. According to him, these measures will remain in place until an agreement is reached to transfer Greenland under US control. Moreover, starting June 1, tariffs are set to rise to 25 percent, which could seriously impact European economies.
This step has drawn sharp criticism from European leaders, who view Washington’s actions as an attempt at economic blackmail. In response, discussions are already underway in Bruxelles about possible countermeasures, including mirror tariffs on American goods and a review of NATO cooperation.
Greenland on the Brink
The situation around Greenland is rapidly spiraling out of control. The island, which for years remained on the sidelines of world news, has suddenly become the center of a geopolitical standoff between the US, Russia, and Europe. The question of who will control this strategic region is becoming increasingly acute.
While some countries are increasing their military presence, others are trying to address the issue through economic means. However, it is clear that neither side is willing to back down. There is a sense in the air that another diplomatic crisis could escalate into something much more serious. And for the first time in a long while, Europe appears ready to challenge American pressure.
