On Sunday afternoon, residents of Valencia received an alarming message on their mobile phones. Regional emergency services issued an Es-Alert warning about a high probability of flooding on the northern and southern coasts of the city. The warning was prompted by an approaching storm that, according to meteorologists, is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Authorities strongly advise people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid crossing potentially dangerous areas, and closely monitor weather updates. Special attention is given to those living near rivers, ravines, and other flood-prone areas. In case of danger, people are advised to move to upper floors or seek higher ground.
Heightened measures
The Emergency Coordination Center has raised the alert level to red along the entire coastal strip of Valencia. In the neighboring provinces of Castellón and Alicante, the alert remains at yellow. Meteorologists report that downpours could be very intense, and waterspouts or small tornadoes may form along the coast. These phenomena are often accompanied by sudden gusts of wind, posing additional risks to people and property.
Authorities emphasize that the risk is especially high for anyone planning to spend time outdoors. Organizers of public gatherings, sporting events, and cultural activities are advised to cancel or postpone them to a safer time. Special attention is given to temporary structures, fairs, and other facilities that could be damaged by strong winds or water.
Changes in protocols
The Es-Alert emergency notification system was upgraded after the tragic events of October 2024, when a delayed warning resulted in more than two hundred fatalities. Now, messages are sent in advance to give residents and municipal services more time to prepare and take necessary measures.
This time, the alert was issued several hours before the start of the hazardous period. Authorities are urging local agencies and organizations responsible for safety to closely monitor all incoming signals and respond quickly to any changes. Municipalities are advised to activate their protocols in advance and ensure the public is informed.
Recommendations and restrictions
Special attention is being paid to warning motorists: do not leave vehicles near riverbeds, in dry ravines, or other potentially dangerous areas. Even if there is no rain in a specific location, sudden water surges can quickly flood the area and sweep away vehicles. Authorities advise blocking off low-lying passages and informing residents about the risks, especially where camping and other outdoor events are taking place.
City services remind residents to follow the civil protection guidelines available on official websites and mobile apps. People are encouraged to review instructions in advance and be prepared for emergencies.
Restrictions in Valencia
Due to the red alert, the Valencia municipality has canceled job entrance exams for EMT candidates that were scheduled to take place at the Polytechnic University. City officials have also asked organizers to postpone the matches of Levante football club and the Valencia Basket basketball team.
All circus performances planned for Sunday have been canceled. Outdoor private events are prohibited. In addition, municipal museums, theaters, libraries, and tourist offices are closed. These measures are aimed at reducing risks for residents and visitors during adverse weather conditions.
