Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to travel to the Spanish capital soon for talks with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. This marks the Ukrainian leader’s third visit to Spain in the past two years, after the trip was postponed following the cancellation of his spring visit.
The exact dates of the visit have not yet been disclosed, as security remains a top priority for both parties. However, it is known that the meeting will continue the active dialogue between Madrid and Kyiv, which has intensified amid recent developments in Europe and continued Western support for Ukraine.
Spain has recently joined NATO’s initiative to help fund arms purchases for Ukraine. Under the so-called ‘Ukraine Priority Requirements List’ (PURL) mechanism, Madrid plans to provide not only military aid but also infrastructure support. Authorities emphasize that backing Kyiv goes beyond delivering equipment—it also covers energy recovery and other sectors.
Zelensky’s first visit to Spain took place in 2023, when he attended the European Political Community summit in Granada. His second visit was in spring 2024, which included meetings with King Felipe VI and an address to the Congress of Deputies. During that trip, a bilateral security and defense cooperation agreement was also signed.
The upcoming talks are expected to strengthen the strategic partnership between the countries and coordinate new areas of support for Ukraine. Amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, Spain is showing its readiness to increase pressure on Moscow together with its allies and to expand the range of assistance to Kyiv.
