As September arrives, the summer bustle in Barcelona gradually subsides, and the city returns to its usual rhythm. During this time, the Catalan capital fills with cultural events, traditional festivities, and musical performances. The mild climate provides comfortable conditions for walks and outdoor activities.
Major city festivities: La Mercè and other celebrations
From September 23 to 28, Barcelona celebrates La Mercè—a large-scale city festival that annually attracts thousands of locals and tourists. The program features a grand pyromusical finale, modern shows with drones, circus performances at Montjuïc Castle, and numerous street activities. This year’s highlights also include the traditional Cursa de la Mercè run, scheduled for September 21 and open to participants of all ages. Local groups, including the municipal orchestra, Extraño Weys Orquesta, and Muqawama, will perform on the city’s squares in Nou Barris and Raval.
District festivals are just as popular. From September 5 to 14, Poblenou will host traditional fiestas with family workshops, chamber concerts, and colorful fireworks. This year, organizers have prepared over 300 cultural events, with the highlights including the correfoc—a fire run procession—and a finale fireworks show.
On the same dates, from September 5 to 14, the Horta district invites everyone to its Festa Major. Visitors can enjoy folk dances, sports competitions, concerts for all ages, and the traditional correfoc, which concludes the celebration.
Gastronomy and sports: festivals for everyone
Beer and German cuisine enthusiasts can visit the San Miguel Biergarten, taking place from September 19 to 28 at Poble Espanyol. Admission is free for Catalonia residents, and visitors can enjoy tastings, workshops, contests, and live music. Menu prices start at 12 euros, and the venue stays open late into the night.
Extreme sports fans can watch competitions in BMX, streetboard, and 3×3 street basketball from September 5 to 7 during Extreme Barcelona. The event will be held at Parc del Fòrum and is open to everyone. Finals for each sport will take place on September 7.
Cultural events and concerts
On September 11, Catalonia celebrates Diada Nacional — a day filled with patriotic and cultural events. On this day, many government institutions, including the parliament and Palau de la Generalitat, open their doors for free visits. It’s an excellent opportunity to explore the region’s history and architecture.
September is also rich in musical events. On September 12, Post Malone will perform at the Olympic Stadium, and on September 23, Mora will give a concert at the Palau Sant Jordi. Sebastián Yatra will bring his summer tour to Barcelona on September 20, and Enrique Bunbury will celebrate his anniversary on the city’s stage on September 18. Jason Mraz will perform at the Palau de la Música Catalana on September 15.
