Madrid holds its breath in anticipation of magic. Very soon, its streets and squares will be transformed into a fairy-tale scene, filled with light and festive spirit. This is the time when the Spanish capital sheds its everyday formality and dresses up in vibrant decorations, drawing locals and visitors from around the world. Traditional markets, the aroma of roasted chestnuts, and of course, the magnificent illuminations become the main symbols of the upcoming celebrations. The official start to this magical season is marked by a grand ceremony of turning on the holiday lights.
Inauguration at Plaza de Cibeles
Once again this year, the iconic Plaza de Cibeles will be the center of attention. On Saturday, November 22, a festive event will take place here to launch the Christmas season. At 7:30 p.m., the Madrid sky will light up with millions of twinkling lights. As in previous years, thousands are expected to gather by the fountain to witness this exciting moment. It’s more than just a technical act—it’s a true ritual that brings city residents together and creates a unique atmosphere of unity and joy.
Technology, art, and music
Organizers promise that the ceremony will be much more than simply turning on lights. The façade of the majestic Cibeles Palace will become a giant screen for a unique video mapping show. Using artificial intelligence and cutting-edge 3D technology, a visual story will unfold, capturing the energy of Madrid’s Christmas. More than 150 experts worked on the project, which will use 14 of the most powerful next-generation projectors. The honor of pressing the symbolic button together with the mayor has been given to two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz. Right after this, the evening’s musical program will begin: renowned singer and composer Pablo López will delight the crowd with a live performance, filling the square with the sounds of his piano and his heartfelt vocals.
Map of the sparkling city
Festive decorations will cover the entire metropolis. More than 240 locations across 21 districts will be adorned with illuminated installations. Special attention has been given to the city’s main arteries and iconic spots: Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, Calle de Alcalá, Plaza Mayor, and Paseo del Prado will shine in a whole new light. Even in the suburbs, residents will be able to soak up the festive spirit thanks to thousands of string lights. In total, more than 7,100 garlands, 126 luminous trees reminiscent of cherry blossoms, and 13 enormous Christmas trees will be used. Over 13 million LED bulbs will transform Madrid into one of the most dazzlingly decorated cities in Europe.
Illumination schedule
You can enjoy this spectacular display until January 6, the day Spain celebrates the Three Wise Men. The lights will follow a special schedule so that as many people as possible can experience the show at its best. From Sunday to Thursday, they will shine from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. On Fridays, Saturdays, and on December 7, the illumination will last an extra hour, until 1:00 a.m. On especially festive nights, the schedule will be extended: on December 24 and January 5, the lights will stay on until 3:00 a.m., and on New Year’s Eve, December 31, the city will sparkle all night long, right up to 6:00 a.m.
