Which Supermarkets Will Open on Valencian Community Day, October 9

Where to Buy Groceries on a Holiday in Valencia – Unexpected Exceptions and Special Opening Hours

On Valencian Community Day, October 9, most stores are closed. However, select locations of some chains will remain open with reduced hours. Find out where and when you can shop on this special day.

On October 9, one of the most significant holidays in the region is celebrated in the Valencian Community. On this day, the usual rhythm of life changes: major retail chains suspend operations and the streets are filled with a festive atmosphere. For many residents and visitors, this means regular shopping routines will need to be adjusted.

Supermarkets such as Mercadona, Consum, Carrefour, Alcampo, Día, Lidl, Economy Cash, and El Corte Inglés will be completely closed for the duration of the holiday. This decision is in line with their policies of observing weekends and public holidays. By the following day, October 10, stores will return to their regular schedules. In the case of Mercadona, locations will also remain closed on October 12, when the entire country marks the Day of the Spanish Nation.

However, not all stores will take a break. Some smaller franchise locations, such as Consum Charter and Carrefour Express, will continue to serve customers. These stores are typically located in busy areas, near tourist routes, or in city centers. Their opening hours may differ, so it’s best to check their official websites for specific schedules before heading out. Thanks to these exceptions, both residents and tourists will be able to purchase essentials even on the holiday, although the selection may be limited.

Shopping centers such as Aqua Multiespacio, El Saler, Bonaire, Nuevo Centro, Gran Turia, and MN4 will also suspend the operation of their stores. However, areas with cafes, restaurants, and cinemas will remain open to visitors. So, despite the closure of most retail outlets, residents and guests of the region will still have the opportunity to spend time watching movies or relaxing in the inviting atmosphere of local cafes.

Valencia’s holiday is traditionally marked by official events, colorful fireworks, and a festive mood. On this day, the city takes on a different rhythm: streets fill with people, and shops make way for celebration. For those who still plan to go shopping, it is important to check in advance which stores will be open and what their operating hours will be.
