Valencian Trail in Barranco Moreno Gorge Named Best Hiking Route of 2024

This wild mountain route in Valencia has captivated thousands of Spanish tourists

Valencia has chosen its top hiking route, hidden in the Caroig mountain range. The trail blends wild nature with history. Discover its unique features.

In the heart of the Valencia province, where tourist trails give way to the untouched wilderness of the Caroig massif, there is a route that in 2024 won the hearts of thousands of outdoor enthusiasts. We’re talking about the PR-CV 173 trail, which runs through the Barranco-Moreno gorge in the municipality of Bicorp. This is not just another scenic path, but a true phenomenon, recognized as the best according to the results of a large-scale public vote organized by the local Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing.

Victory in the competition was a natural result of the growing popularity of this route. The trail offers a perfect balance between physical exertion and aesthetic pleasure, which has attracted the attention of both seasoned hikers and those just discovering the world of trekking. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the city bustle and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of wild, untouched Spain.

A journey to the sources

The route forms a loop just shy of eleven kilometers with several radial segments. Completing it takes about three and a half hours on average. The elevation gain is about 350 meters, classifying the trail as moderate in difficulty. It’s ideal for those who already have some experience on rocky paths and aren’t afraid of moderate climbs, while no special mountaineering gear is required. Comfortable shoes and plenty of water are enough.

The trail begins at the outskirts of Bicorp, leading travelers along the old road to Harafuel and the secluded house of Casa del Pino. After ascending a mountain pass at 557 meters, the path joins the longer GR-237 route and descends toward the canyon bed. This is where the most breathtaking part of the journey unfolds. Hikers come upon rock shelters with prehistoric cave paintings. These fenced-off examples of Levantine art, recognized by UNESCO as world heritage, offer a glimpse into a distant past, making visitors reflect on the people who lived here thousands of years ago.

The trail then winds along the canyon floor, passing areas with small natural pools and a tiny spring. Lush riparian vegetation sharply contrasts with the pine forests and Mediterranean shrubs that blanket the slopes. The route combines natural and cultural heritage within a landscape that preserves the essence of the Valencian mountains. Around the eighth kilometer, the trail begins to climb through wooded terrain, gradually returning to its starting point.

Popular recognition

What made this route stand out in the eyes of thousands? Its victory in the FEMECV contest was not the decision of an expert panel, but the result of a public vote. Thousands of tourists and locals cast their votes online, choosing Barranco-Moreno from among many other worthy candidates. This fact gives the award particular significance, confirming that the trail truly meets the expectations of a wide range of people.

The key factors behind its success were not only the unique landscapes and historical value, but also the excellent signage. Hikers note that the route is easy and safe to follow, allowing them to fully focus on the beauty of nature without worrying about getting lost. The variety of scenery—from wooded areas to a rocky canyon—keeps the journey engaging, making every step feel like a new discovery.

New horizons for hiking tourism

Although the celebration of the 2024 winner is still ongoing, preparations for the second edition of the contest are already in full swing. In 2025, the organizers have decided to expand the program and introduced two categories: best route in the Valencian Community overall and best route in municipalities at risk of depopulation. This move highlights the important social role of hiking tourism as a tool for revitalizing rural areas and combating population decline in the so-called ‘Empty Spain.’

Applications from municipalities and tourist associations will be accepted until mid-October. In November, a new online vote will be launched to determine the next winner. This competition not only highlights the best hiking spots, but also encourages local authorities to develop infrastructure, protect nature, and promote their unique areas that were previously known to only a few.
