The Aragonese Pyrenees attract travelers with their majestic scenery, offering routes for every taste—from challenging alpine climbs to tranquil walks. Among this variety lies a true gem, accessible to almost everyone: a circular route in the Echo Valley. This is more than just a trail; it’s a full immersion in the region’s nature and history, perfect for those seeking tranquility and beauty without exhausting physical effort.
The journey begins in the tiny Pyrenean village of Urdués, where time seems to stand still. From the bridge linking the two parts of the settlement, the well-marked GR 15 trail starts. From the very first steps, you’re embraced by nature: the path gently climbs along the Romaciete gorge, winding between lush meadows and shady groves. The air is filled with the scents of pines and oaks, and underfoot you’ll find a comfortable path that has been used by locals for centuries.
The route is designed to gradually reveal new and stunning panoramas. As you gain elevation—just about 170 meters—the landscape transforms. Forested stretches give way to open slopes with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valley. The highlight of the ascent is reaching the ridge dividing the Romaciete and Santa Eulalia gorges. This is the perfect spot to pause for a moment to soak in the space and silence.
From the ridge, the trail turns onto a secondary road, which begins its descent into the neighboring valley. Soon, nestled among the dense greenery, the first destination comes into view: the restored chapel of the Virgin Mary of Catarecha. This site has a special energy. Revived by the local municipality, the chapel is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of respect for local heritage. Here, far from the bustle, you can relax and feel a deep connection to the history of this land.
The way back to Urdués is no less picturesque. To complete the loop, you leave the marked GR 15 route and continue through the Santa Eulalia gorge. Getting lost is impossible here: the trail naturally follows the streambed. The landscape changes once again as you walk through a shaded pine forest with a refreshing coolness. Sunny clearings and thickets of shrubbery along the slopes create a scenic contrast. In places, the path merges with the rocky creek bed, adding a touch of adventure to your walk.
The entire route, just over five and a half kilometers long, is easily and unhurriedly walked. The final stretch leads onto a narrow road that brings you back to Urdués. This hike is the perfect choice for families with children, beginner hikers, or anyone looking to spend a few hours immersed in nature without pushing for athletic feats. It is the essence of the beauty of the Valle de Echo, accessible to everyone.
