In the heart of the Serra do Courel mountain range, within the municipality of Quiroga in the province of Lugo, a true treasure for nature lovers is hidden from view. This is not just another tourist trail, but a real adventure that lets you experience the diversity of Galician landscapes in a single day. Here, far from bustling cities and well-trodden paths, you can find solitude and witness the power and beauty of water, embodied in five entirely different waterfalls, each with its own character.
The journey begins at the Pombar waterfall. The path to it immediately sets the tone for the day: both a challenge and an anticipation. You’ll need to tackle a rather steep descent of nearly a kilometer, where every step demands concentration. But what awaits at the end makes you forget any difficulties. A twelve-meter stream plunges into a wide, deep basin, creating a scene of untamed force. The air here is thick with moisture and coolness, and the roar of the water drowns out all other sounds, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the moment.
Just a few kilometers from the first wonder lies the second—Pedriña Waterfall. The landscape here changes dramatically. Fed by the River Quiroga, the cascade plunges fifteen meters amid dense riverside forest. In summer, this spot resembles a lost corner of the tropics, as the greenery appears exceptionally lush and vibrant. In rainy weather, the trails become slippery, adding an adventurous edge to the hike and serving as a reminder of the wild character of local nature, which demands both respect and caution.
The path then leads to one of the most picturesque villages in the region, the hamlet of A-Searea. Here, nature and people coexist in perfect harmony. Right in the center of this charming settlement, surrounded by stone houses with tiled roofs, stands the Gurbiás Waterfall. There’s no need to search for it by wandering forest trails—it’s an integral part of the village landscape and can be admired from a specially equipped viewpoint. This marks a striking contrast after the secluded woodland cascades.
The next point on the map is the Focaro Waterfall, one of the highest in Courel. Its waters plunge more than thirty meters, and the flow does not dry up even during droughts, maintaining its strength throughout the year. It is located right next to the path leading to Lake Lousenza, making it easily accessible. The roar of the falling water can be heard from afar, while up close, a cloud of mist creates a rainbow on sunny days.
The day ends with Vieiros Waterfall, the tallest of the five. It rises to 34 meters, but it’s not just the height that impresses. The surrounding rocks are of great geological interest, showcasing unique layers and textures. This spot is also popular with canyoning enthusiasts, which speaks to its remarkable terrain and appeal for adventure seekers.
