At the height of the summer season, when temperatures in Seville reach their peak, many seek relief from the heat. Far from the bustling city streets, in the heart of the Parque Natural de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla, lies a place that is attracting more and more nature and cool-seekers every year. This spot has become an ideal destination for those looking to relax during the hot months, enjoying the freshness of river waters and tranquility.
This is Isla Margarita, also known as Isla del Pescador. It is a recreational area located between the municipalities of Cazalla de la Sierra and San Nicolás del Puerto. To reach the island, visitors must cross a picturesque wooden bridge. On the other side, a space lush with alder, willow, and elm trees unfolds. The dense canopies of these trees provide deep shade, keeping the air temperature here several degrees cooler than the surroundings. The area is well maintained, making it a wonderful choice for a day trip and swimming.
The main attraction of this location is the río Huéznar, which runs through the entire area, forming natural pools and basins with crystal-clear water. These bodies of water are shallow but very refreshing, making them a favorite summer spot for families with children and groups of friends. For visitors’ convenience, the recreation area is equipped with tables and benches under the trees, providing a perfect setting for picnics. There are also convenient access points for those arriving by bicycle from neighboring villages.
In addition to swimming, a visit to Margarita Island offers opportunities for active recreation. Nearby runs the Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte—a former railway line converted into a trail for hiking and cycling. Stretching 18 kilometers, it passes through tunnels, bridges, and picturesque landscapes, ending at the natural monument Cerro del Hierro. Additionally, such popular spots as the Cascadas del Huéznar and the river beach of San Nicolás del Puerto are located close by, rounding out the picture of an ideal summer getaway in the province of Sevilla.
