A Natural Park in Catalonia Straight Out of a Hayao Miyazaki Film

A slice of Japan in southern Catalonia. Discover landscapes straight out of a Miyazaki anime

Catalonia is home to a truly unique spot. Its landscapes are simply breathtaking, as if lifted from the big screen. This is a real-life world of Japanese anime. Find out where it is and how to get there.

The landscapes of the Delta del Ebro Natural Park in Catalonia evoke scenes from animated masterpieces like ‘Spirited Away.’ Flooded rice fields, exotic birds, and breathtaking sunset hues transform this area into a magical universe. All of this is enhanced by a unique product with protected designation of origin, deeply rooted in the region’s agricultural history.

Some corners of southern Catalonia look as if they’ve stepped right out of Hayao Miyazaki’s sketches. There’s no need to fly to Japan to watch a train gliding through waterlogged fields. The Delta del Ebro is not only a haven for migratory birds, but also a natural stage that captivates with its mystical, almost cinematic atmosphere. A patchwork of rice paddies, white barraca houses, and canals reflect the sky with a beauty that seems frozen in time.

A kingdom of rice, flamingos, and shifting colors

Established in 1983, the Delta del Ebro Natural Park spans more than 7,700 hectares, making it the largest wetland in Catalonia. In spring and summer, the rice fields turn a lush green; in winter, they take on earthy tones, and in spring, they’re once again flooded with water. This natural cycle turns the landscape into a living work of art that changes with the seasons, enchanting all who visit.

The Delta ecosystem, formed at the meeting point of fresh and salt waters, is home to one of the largest colonies of flamingos in the Mediterranean. Other inhabitants include rare species such as the red-necked bat, blue-tailed redstart, and little bittern. The Buda lagoons, El Fangar bay, and the La Tancada observation decks allow visitors to observe this biodiversity without disturbing nature, following trails suitable for both walking and cycling.

Buda Island and the Local Culinary Treasure

Located within the park, Buda Island is the only inhabited island in Catalonia. Access to this patch of land, which combines wetlands, dunes, and rice fields, is possible only by organized tour. Its isolation and careful environmental stewardship have helped preserve vulnerable species such as the Kentish plover. The island also features a historic farmhouse that now serves as a center for ecological research.

Since the 19th century, rice cultivation has shaped the region. Its importance is such that rice from Delta de l’Ebre has held Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) status since 1996. Its remarkable ability to absorb flavors makes it an essential ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine, especially in paella. Sustainable agriculture has created a landscape that is both scenic and fertile.

How to Reach the Magical World of the Delta

The park is easily accessible from Tortosa or Amposta. From Barcelona, the drive takes about two hours via the AP-7 highway, exits 40 or 41. Then, roads TV-3405 or TV-3454 lead straight to the park’s borders. There is also a bus service from Tortosa and a railway line connecting Barcelona, Tarragona, and Tortosa.

In addition to rice fields, the Delta del Ebro is known for its wild beaches, such as El Trabucador. Here, the wind and calm sea attract kitesurfers and hiking enthusiasts. In this spot, the sea seems to blend with the sky, and every sunset turns the horizon into a scene worthy of a Ghibli film, with soft colors enveloping the landscape in a magical haze.
