When autumn arrives, we often picture the golden and crimson landscapes of the north. But there’s a place that breaks this stereotype. In the very heart of the Sierra Norte mountain range, within the municipality of Cantalojas, lies a true natural treasure that offers an alternative to long trips to the northern coast.
This is Tejera Negra Park, considered one of the southernmost ecosystems of its kind in Europe. Its uniqueness was recognized in 2017, when it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, alongside other primeval forests of the Carpathians and various European regions. This oasis owes its existence to a special microclimate created by the rivers Lillas and Zarzas, which flow through the valleys. Their moisture sustains this relict island of nature in the center of the peninsula.
A walk along its trails feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The ground is covered with a soft mossy carpet, and the palette of colors changes not only with each new season, but even with the time of day. Elegant beeches share space with Pyrenean oaks, hollies, rowans, and birches. In autumn, the earth generously rewards mushroom gatherers with prized porcini. The wildlife is just as lively: in the thickets you might spot roe deer, foxes, or wild boar, and if you look up, you may catch sight of the majestic silhouette of a golden eagle soaring above the treetops.
For the convenience of visitors, marked trails have been laid out throughout the site. The most popular among them is the circular path “Senda de Carretas,” a six-kilometer route that requires no special training and is suitable for families. For more experienced and physically fit hikers, there is the “Senda del Robledal,” offering a longer and more challenging trek. Additionally, a dedicated cycling path leads deeper into the Sarsas River valley.
Due to the immense popularity of this destination, especially in autumn, parking at the start of the main trail must be reserved in advance through the park’s official portal. This measure is aimed at protecting the delicate balance of the ecosystem. While autumn is considered the best time to visit, spring and summer also offer their own unique charm, with fresh greenery and cool shade. In winter, however, access becomes a real challenge due to harsh weather conditions and heavy snowfall, making it almost inaccessible for most visitors.
