Deep within the green landscapes of Lugo province in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula lies a remarkable haven—a true ark for animals who have suffered from human cruelty or adversity. This is no ordinary zoological park. Instead, it’s a vast refuge where animals with difficult pasts are given a second chance at a dignified and peaceful life. Visitors of all ages can do more than just observe exotic creatures: here, you’re immersed in an atmosphere of care and profound respect for our animal companions, watching them thrive in settings that closely resemble their natural habitats. A weekend trip here promises not just an unforgettable experience, but also a valuable lesson in compassion and environmental responsibility for the next generation.
The Sanctuary’s Mission and Residents
This nature reserve, named Marcelle Natureza and located in San Martín de Gilar, is dedicated above all to the rehabilitation of its residents. Its mission goes far beyond providing shelter. Here, a wide range of creatures have found a home, each with its own story: from graceful northern lynxes and playful lemurs to resilient dromedary camels and powerful Iberian wolves. Special attention is given to the psychological well-being of the inhabitants. For example, the local clan of brown bears, who have suffered a great deal, benefit from a specially designed adaptation program. This helps them overcome the effects of a difficult past with targeted training and positive reinforcement, gradually regaining trust in their environment. The philosophy of this institution is not simply to exhibit animals, but to create an enriching, stimulating environment that supports both their physical health and emotional balance.
Interactive programs for visitors
For visitors looking to delve deeper into the inner workings of this world and contribute personally, several engaging interactive programs are available. One of the most popular is the “Into the Forest” tour. On this walk, guests follow trails through an authentic woodland, observing spotted axis deer or wild mouflon sheep without the usual enclosures—of course, always guided by an expert. For adult enthusiasts (strictly 18+), there’s an exclusive opportunity to “Be a Keeper for a Day.” For €150 and with advance booking, participants can spend a full day side by side with the professionals, immersing themselves in daily routines from preparing food and joining veterinary workshops to touring the sprawling grounds in a 4×4 vehicle. And for all ages, with no extra fee, there’s a public capybara feeding every weekend at 18:30 (in October) by the bird observatory—a charming and delightful spectacle.
