In recent years, the car buying and selling market in Spain has changed significantly, yet some car owners still prefer the old-fashioned way of selling—posting paper ads on their car windows. Although this practice is becoming increasingly rare, certain drivers continue to use this method, unaware of the possible consequences.
Placing a sheet of paper with information about a car for sale on the windshield or side window can result in a fine. There are several reasons for this. According to the current traffic regulations, the driver is required to ensure an unobstructed view of the road. Any object that covers part of the glass may be considered an obstacle to visibility, which violates safety requirements.
Article 19.1 of the Reglamento General de Circulación stipulates that the glass surfaces of a vehicle must provide the driver with a full and unobstructed view. In addition, Article 18 of the same document obliges the driver to maintain freedom of movement, a clear field of vision, and constant attention to vehicle control. If an inspector determines that the notice on the window obstructs visibility, it may be classified as a minor infraction, punishable by a €100 fine.
However, the fine can increase if the car owner’s actions are viewed as unauthorized street trading. In some Spanish cities, such as Vitoria, local authorities have tightened control over such advertisements. There have been cases where fines for posting ads on car windows reached €750 or even €1,000. In certain instances, vehicles were towed to an impound lot.
Municipal regulations in Vitoria impose strict measures against unauthorized street trading, including selling cars by placing ads on windows. As a result, several car owners have faced unexpectedly high fines, sparking widespread public discussion about the proportionality of such penalties.
Experts note that, despite the seemingly harmless nature of this sales method, it can lead to significant financial losses. Car owners are advised to use official online platforms or specialized sites to post ads, in order to avoid unpleasant consequences and fines.
Thus, a common practice for many—placing paper ads on car windows in Spain—can result in substantial expenses. Drivers should be aware of the current regulations and choose safer, legal ways to sell their vehicles.
