Lisbon and the Tagus River (Tajo) have been inseparably connected for centuries. The river served as the city’s cradle, gateway to the world, and source of inspiration. Today, the waterways of the Portuguese capital offer a unique opportunity to see its famous scenery from a completely different perspective by taking a journey along the calm waters of the Tagus.
A wide range of river cruises is available for tourists: from panoramic sunset cruises and guided tours to private trips and themed routes. These excursions provide a chance to fully appreciate Lisbon’s unique light, its architecture, and rich history. One of the main starting points for such adventures is the fully renovated South and Southeast Maritime Station (Estação Marítima Sul e Sueste). This historic site now combines original architecture with a modern leisure area featuring terraces overlooking the river and an information center dedicated to the Tagus.
Among the vessels navigating the river, there are true historical gems. The frigate “Don Fernando II e Glória” (Fragata D.Fernando II e Glória) is the last large Portuguese ship to sail exclusively under wind power. Today, it has been transformed into a floating museum located just half an hour from the city center. Its meticulously restored interiors immerse visitors in the maritime life of the 19th century. Another treasure of the river fleet is the traditional boat “Varino Liberdade,” built in 1945. It serves both as a museum and a tourist vessel, offering routes from March to October through the Tagus estuary nature reserve.
Those who prefer to enjoy the views from shore should visit Cais das Colunas on Terreiro do Paço. This spot is considered one of Lisbon’s landmarks. Its marble steps, descending directly into the water, and the two columns that gave the pier its name, have for centuries been the scene for royal arrivals and important delegations coming to the city by river.
For a deeper immersion into the city’s culture, tourists are offered the Lisboa Card. This tourist pass provides free access to more than 50 museums and architectural landmarks, as well as unlimited use of public transport. In addition, the card offers discounts from 5% to 50% on attractions, in shops, and for various services. It also allows you to easily and quickly visit such iconic places as the National Palace of Ajuda, the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum), or the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (National Museum of Ancient Art).
