New Highway Section Under Construction Between Trujillo and Cáceres in Extremadura

Pedro Sánchez and the Minister of Transport visited a major road construction site in Extremadura

A large-scale road infrastructure project has begun in Cáceres. Authorities have announced investments and completion timelines. Temporary traffic changes have been introduced in the region.

On October 8, 2025, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, along with Transport and Mobility Minister Óscar Puente and Government Delegate José Luis Quintana, arrived in Cáceres. The main purpose of the visit was to inspect the progress of the A-58 highway extension, which will connect the cities of Trujillo, Cáceres, and Badajoz in Extremadura.

On the same day, Sánchez attended the international tourism convention Turespaña, held from October 6 to 9 at the Congress Palace of Cáceres. The event brought together representatives of the tourism industry from around the world, underscoring the region’s importance for tourism development.

After meeting with forum participants, the Prime Minister visited the construction site of the new highway. The project will connect Trujillo with Cáceres via a new section nearly 14 kilometers long, running between Cáceres and the Ayuela River. The budget allocated amounts to 94.3 million euros. The work is expected to be completed in about 40 months, although contractors hope to accelerate the process.

The construction plan includes 12 engineering structures, with nine overpasses and one underpass, as well as a set of measures for water drainage, restoration of affected utilities, and installation of additional infrastructure. This includes laying fiber-optic lines, installing fences, and setting up traffic monitoring stations.

Starting October 1, temporary traffic restrictions have been introduced in the area where it connects with the A-66. Traffic towards Salamanca is closed, with vehicles redirected to an alternative two-way lane. These measures are necessary to ensure worker safety and will remain in place for about three months. Additionally, exits to the N-523 road have changed: they are now accessed via the interchange at kilometer 551 of the A-66, rather than at 555 as before.

The implementation of this infrastructure project aims to improve the region’s transport accessibility and create new opportunities for economic growth in Extremadura.
