Spain continues to implement modern technologies in road safety. In recent months, special cameras have appeared on the roads of Madrid aimed at improving driver discipline and reducing the number of accidents.
The initiative was introduced by the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), which set a goal to minimize the number of tragedies related to ignoring road markings. According to official data, in 2021 alone, more than two hundred people died on Spanish roads due to such violations.
As part of a pilot project, surveillance systems were installed on four sections of highways in the capital region. They are designed to detect cases where drivers cross a solid line when merging onto the main road from the acceleration lane. Such maneuvers, despite being prohibited, are still quite common and pose a serious risk to all road users.
Technically, the system consists of two cameras placed at a certain distance from each other. The first captures license plates of vehicles on the acceleration lane, while the second records vehicles already on the main road. By comparing the collected data, specialists determine whether a prohibited maneuver has occurred.
If a violation is detected, the information is automatically sent to the Administrative Case Processing Center. There, staff manually review the records to rule out errors. If the violation is confirmed, the vehicle owner receives a notification of a €200 fine. Driver’s license points are not deducted in this case.
All four systems are located on major highways around Madrid: at kilometer 15.95 of the A-1, 11.8 km on the A-2, 16.9 km on the A-42, and 20.2 km on the A-6. These sections were chosen due to heavy traffic and frequent rule violations.
The introduction of these new technologies has already attracted the attention of motorists and experts. Such measures are expected to improve road safety and reduce the number of serious incidents.
