Families in Abrera’s outlying neighborhoods will soon see a major change in how their children get to school. The local council has announced it will pay the full cost of school transport for students from I3 through Bachillerato, starting with the 2026-2027 academic year. This initiative targets residents of Sant Miquel, Can Vilaba, Santa Maria de Vilalba, Les Carpes, and Ca n’Amat—areas notably distant from the town’s main educational centers.
According to the town hall, a total of 254 fully subsidized seats will be available across four dedicated bus routes. Two of these routes (101 and 102) will serve children attending Escola Francesc Platón i Sartí from I3 to sixth grade, offering 126 seats split between two coaches. Each bus will have two adult supervisors on board to ensure safety during the journey.
Older students enrolled in ESO and Bachillerato at Institut Voltrera will have access to routes 105 and 106, which together provide 128 seats in two additional coaches. These buses will each have a dedicated supervisor. All routes are designed to connect the five targeted neighborhoods directly with the respective schools, with stops clearly marked at key points in each area.
The council’s decision means families will not pay anything for the service, a move intended to remove barriers for students living far from the urban core. The measure comes after a period of operational issues with the current transport provider, Monbus. Over the past two years, various incidents have been reported, prompting the council to tighten oversight and establish a monitoring committee to ensure contract compliance and service quality.
In addition to the new controls, the council has communicated all incidents to both the Consell Comarcal and Monbus, requesting that appropriate penalties and corrective actions be applied. The presence of adult supervisors on each route is also seen as a step toward improving safety and accountability, while creating employment opportunities for route monitors and support staff.
