The cruise ship Ambition, which reported an outbreak of gastroenteritis on board, has arrived at the port of the Basque Country autonomous community. According to La Razon, 30 active cases of the disease were detected among passengers and crew members.
Before calling at the Basque Country, Ambition had already stopped at two other Spanish ports, and prior to that — at ports in France and the United Kingdom, including the Shetland Islands, Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest. According to the initial route, the ship is scheduled to complete its cruise in Liverpool on May 22.
There were more than 1,700 people on board. After arriving at the Spanish port, a medical team was dispatched to the liner to collect biological samples from passengers and crew for laboratory testing. Until the results were received, everyone on board was prohibited from leaving the ship.
After the gastroenteritis outbreak was confirmed, the restrictions were lifted and passengers were allowed to disembark. According to La Razon, such strict measures were linked to concerns over a recent hantavirus outbreak on another cruise ship — the MV Hondius, which prompted authorities to tighten sanitary control on maritime routes.
In recent years, infection cases on cruise ships have drawn particular attention from European health authorities. Disease outbreaks aboard ships can spread rapidly due to confined spaces and a large number of people on board, requiring swift action and strict monitoring.
