Andrew Garfield has ruled out an appearance in the upcoming Marvel film ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, putting weeks of speculation about a possible return to rest. Meanwhile, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, starring Tom Holland, continues to break box office records in North America.
The film has already earned $891 million domestically and could become the first to cross $1 billion in North America. Garfield hasn’t reached out to Holland to congratulate him. At the West Hollywood premiere of his new film ‘The Uprising’, he said he wants to wait until he’s seen ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and Holland’s other recent project, ‘The Odyssey’, before sending a message. Garfield wants his praise to feel genuine and reflect the work itself, not the numbers.
Garfield, who played Spider-Man in two films before returning in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ with Holland and Tobey Maguire, said the new film’s success doesn’t surprise him. He pointed to Spider-Man’s appeal as an ordinary person who becomes a hero, a quality that makes the character easy for audiences to relate to. For Garfield, viewers connect with the franchise because they see their own struggles and victories in Spider-Man’s story.
Asked again about rumors tying him to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, Garfield was direct: he’s not in the cast. He added that audiences will see for themselves soon enough. Smiling as he spoke, he left little room for doubt, even as fan theories and online speculation continue.
Garfield is now focused on his latest project, Paul Greengrass’s ‘The Uprising’, in which he plays a fictional rebel leader in 1831 England. The director said Garfield did most of his own stunts during the film’s fight scenes. Garfield, meanwhile, admitted the physical work left him reaching for ice packs for his knees. The film opens in theaters on September 10.
